The refugee & migrant crisis

I'm disappointed. In fact I'm disgusted that the EU are giving any concessions to a country that illegally occupies an EU country, continues a murderous pursecution of the Kurds and closes down newspapers that the government dislikes. This isn't an agreement, it's blackmail and bribery.

That's what you wanted agreement on wasn't it?

I doubt if we could reach agreement on anything much where politics is concerned. :smiles:

I wonder if anyone else is as disappointed as I am by the EU's squalid little "one-for-one" deal in the refugee/migrant crisis?

No,I don't have any "magic bullet" solutions but I'd be interested to hear what other zoners think about the worst humanitarian crisis facing Europe since WW2.

Truly shameful deal, and probably totally unworkable.

I expected nothing less from our EU overlords.

The action(s) taken by the EU (including the UK), the UN, the US of A, and a host of other countries are poor efforts indeed BUT the shallowness of them is oceans deep compared to the actions (NOT) of Arab and fellow Muslim nations.
2 wrongs don't make a right etc and a lead should be taken by the "civilised" nations first however surely to god,or Allah, or Budda or jedi a Sheikh or two could lend a ferrari or at least a BMW to facilitate the fleeing to safety.:whistling::net::tumbleweed::tumbleweed:

The Sun revealed that an illegal migrant was treated on the NHS to the tune of £181,000 !,no wonder this country is skint.

Must be true then.

The story has been covered by most of the tabloids including the Mirror, also was in the Broadsheets.

The story broke on the back of a Leading cancer specialist who claims that the costs of Health tourism to the NHS is unsustainable.

According to some reports, the NHS lost 2 billion due to health tourism in 2013.

Its seems bizarre to me that we cut our own people in benefits, services etc whilst attempting to fund a world wide health service.

Ultimately its up to you what you choose to believe, and you may well believe that as a rich Nation we have a duty to help others no matter where they come from or whatever the cost (I wouldn't disagree with this as an aspiration).

What has to be faced by all of us whether thinking of Refugees/migrants/ health tourists etc is when is enough, enough?

Do we take every single refugee?...every migrant?, pay for every health tourist?

When do we stop?, at what number?, at what cost?

Health tourism? would this be the late term pregnant arrivals at west London hospitals having flown into Heathrow while "just" 5 months in? Or Asian migrants (legal or not) with TB in the east of London areas? or the predominance of Zimbabwean (real or claiming to be from that country and orientation) claiming asylum (sexual discrimination) and needing treatment for HIV?
The drugs alone on "free" prescription to many are very, very expensive.
It is a fine line between realism that the NHS cannot sustain an unfettered burdon of these or many similar "extras" and fulfill it's role to the indigenous Brit; AND the free speech on the issue: UNTIL the orator gets a "racist/facist" type label stuck on him, or her - unless that person is the ABC.

i think Turkey have us over a barrel but they hold all the aces and we have nothing to hold against so it's hardly surprising.

unless we come up with a solution that changes the whole terms of the game then we're still going to be in this position. somehow, i'd imagine, the countries these people live in need to be made more attractive to them so that they don't risk life and limb coming to Europe because, in no particular order, 1) it's killing them 2) people in Europe aren't happy with it

Europe is rife with economic stagnation (not caused by migration) and adding tens or hundreds of thousands or millions of newcomers is not likely to make people already here very happy.

if it happens then kiss the welfare state goodbye because people won't do it

so we need a solution other than 'let them all in' and we need one soon

What would be your answer then?

Would you allow every illegal immigrant from Pakistan to stay?

Do you believe that who ever arrives and no matter how many, even if they are from a safe country we say Yes.

What would be your long term solution.

I don't have any solution, apart from all EU states signing up for a quota system for genuine refugees, (as I've said before).

Ps Not going to Blackpool today?

Migrants.....I don't know of many who would not take genuine refuges. I don't know of many who would take illegal immigrants.

Blackpool... Was planning a weekend but I have to look after my mum who is suffering from Dementia and can't be left on her own for any length of time. I normally try to have Saturdays free but even have to miss the odd home game.

She worked all her life into her seventies. Never claimed a penny in benefits and the only time she has spent in hospital was after falling over a couple of times in recent years. She can have a home help twice a week for a short time, anything more and she will have to pay.

As you know we are all in this together.

PS She likes sitting with me as we listen to the BBC Essex commentary.

Mutti didn't have much luck getting other EU member states to sign up for her quota plan for refugees.

(On a personal note you're lucky to have a chance to look after your Mum properly.I didn't and it still hurts).

Ps We're most definitetly not all in this together, unfortunately .:winking:

Frau Merkel's ill thought out way of dealing with refugee crisis has caused irreparable harm, to her own nation, Europe, and the refugees themselves.

Germany was ill prepared for the numbers invited, Europe was not consulted or in agreement with her decision, and how many refugess lost their lives on perilous crossings due to her invitation?

Soooooooooooo the migrant invasion takes another twist as they land in Italy In their thousands.

Merkel must be very proud of her actions.
