Third Test, England v. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat.

Big news is that Sajjid Mahmood has been dropped and replaced by Gloucestershire's Jon Lewis. Surprising call, there.

Lewis has been in good form, though - and you get plenty of movement throught the air and off the seam up in Nottingham, which may be why the selectors have gone for the more traditionally English-style swing bowling of Lewis over the raw pace of Mahmood.

Add to that the fact that the Lankans have really struggled with movement through the air - England's top bowler this series has unquestionably been Hoggard - and it adds up to a decent case for Jon Lewis.

UPDATE!!

Lewis has opened the bowling with Hoggard, and in his first over has picked up a wicket!! Top man - what a great way to start your Test career.

Sri Lanka 2/1 - and it's the dangerous Michael Vandort who has been sent back to the Pavillion.

* * *

Meanwhile, SL - in a move that smacks mildly of desperation - have recalled former captain Sanath Jayasuriya, presumably because he has played a few county seasons here, and is thus one of the few people able to cope with the swing & seam of the English attack. He replaces Samaraweera, who had a dreadful Test at Edgbaston (8 & 3).

Kulasekera has also been dropped and has been replaced by the man whom he, in turn, replaced - Kapugedera, whose Test debut came at Lord's.

Current score: SL are 3/1.

Lunch: A late breakthrough sees Sri Lanka wobbling at 86-4

Brilliant, brilliant fightback from Freddy Flintoff.  At 82/1, the Lankans definitely had the upper hand... but Freddy got Sangakkara with a slower ball, Thuranga followed the next over chasing one from Hoggy and then Jayawardene goes for a duck the over after, nicking one from Freddy.  Lanka's solid foundations spiked in the space of three overs.  Magnificent.

The next pair are no mugs, though - Dilshan and Jayasuriya.  This should be interesting...

I think the Sri Lankans are a bit peeved about the decision against Sangakkara though, that has changed everything.

Absolutely. Was it a poor decision?

Apparently it may of hit the pad first and not bat or glove.

To be fair, at normal speed it looked and sounded pretty much like a nick, but Sky's cameras show that it did hit the pad, and not the bat. Another decision that might have been better taken by the third umpire were he empowered to?

But that's a different debate altogether. It obviously wasn't too successful when tried in the 6 day test between Aus V RoW otherwise we might have seen it introduced by now.

However, I would quite like to see a system where you are allowed 3 appeals each innings (from both teams).

Latest: 129/7

IMO the only decisions that should be referred to the third umpire are line decisions, stumpings, run outs, boundary shots etc. When appeals for catches have been referred often the evidence is inconclusive.

The tail wagged very hard again - Chaminda Vaas top-scoring with 38 n.o. and Murali with 33 from 29 balls to take the Lankans to 231 all out - one heck of a recovery from 140/8.

England 38/1 after 12 overs - the twelfth over having been bowled by... Murali. He's on early, even for Lankan standards! Strauss the man out; Banger & Cook in.

SL 322 all out - Panesar gets his first 5fer in Tests, finished with 5-78, top effort.

England set 325 to win, currently 12/0 - its going to be a massive effort to win this one with Murali weaving his magic at one end.

Monday Update

OK, so we all know how the weekend went - we batted poorly, left Lanka with a two-run first innings lead; Lanka have batted well in their second innings, and the story now is:

SL: 322 all out - Plunkett and Panesar (2) picked up the remaining 3 wickets this morning for the addition of 36 runs - an excellent fightback by England, and a first five-fer for Monty. Top effort from the lad.

England in reply, needing 325 to win, are 29/0 after 8 overs.

There is definitely going to be a result in this Test - after all, it started (unusually) on a Friday, so there's a day and a half left in the game.

It is simply going to boil down to how well the pitch is playing, and how the England batsmen deal with Murali - that will determine who will win the Test. It should be an absorbing contest!

We need

Good start, and important England did not lose an early wicket or two. Ideally one batsman needs to make a big hundred for England to win.
