Time runs out for Southends millenium clock

For me, that clock always looked like it belonged in the 1990s and felt 'out-of-date' as soon as it was unveiled in 2000. A symbol of the fortunes of Southend itself? The fact that it is being removed is interesting too- does this mean that the new millenium has been cancelled only ten years in? Perhaps it signifies the closing of time for workers at HSBC, Eon and elsewhere in the town, perhaps the death of the 'Great British town centre'. Maybe even this apparently insignificant event in a forgotten corner of England signals the end of history itself- the collapse of the very idea of historical progress.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this.

The passing of the clock does free up a bit more lebensraum for the annual Kriskindle market blitzkreig.

Not sure about anyone else but I like my market traders to be either from the Pete Beale camp (moonboots, money belt and flat cap) or butchers with a microphone whipping up punters into a frenzy for cheap meat.

There is something about those fake ski lodge market stalls I find quite unsavoury.
