Your Cricket Club - Who do you play for?

Pegasus & Corringham in the mid-essex league. I'm certain someone on here plays for Hatfield Peverall, judging by their number plate. Whoever you are, I cleaned bowled you for next to nothing last year on our way to bowling you out for 69 (my favourite number). If you're lucky I'll let you out of my pocket this season. he he
And believe me,those pockets are deep.

Dells is a bit of a FTB. Good cricketer undoubtedly, but won't play for the 1's, so his record should be viewed accordingly.

Also not a WCC legend compared to likes of Mark Goodard, Mark Evans, Nigel Finch, Mark Everitt etc.

My cricket mate Mark Goddard, haven't seen him in years! What is he upto?

southend4ever I umpired your game against Horndon On The Hill last August, were you playing? Judging by the batting performance of your blokes, I hope not!

I dare say I will get another Billericay game this season, hopefully at your cracking new ground!

I think it is a great shames in this country that few people actively play cricket.....either recreationally or in the more organised format. I went to a school that would be considered one of the better cricket schools in the area but we still would only play about 5 matches a year......, and a lot of my friends who went to other schools are massive cricket fans but barely played at all and therefore never even found out if they had the aptitude for it or not.

In my case, because I'd not been in the UK much until the age of about 9 or 10 - so hadn't the foggiest idea about cricket in general - the coaching staff at my junior school couldn't apparently be bothered to teach me the basics. That I was a bit tubby(*) and that I also professed a keenness to score - since I just wanted to understand more about this beguiling new sport - rather appeared to make up the coaching-staff's minds for them. Thus it was that I never really learned how to play cricket - even though my flexible musician's wrists may have been able to impart a bit of spin on the ball...

*sigh*

Matt

(*That said, I wasn't useless at sport by any means - 2nd XV rugby, 2nd XI hockey, albeit as keeper, 1st VIII rifle shooting)

Pegasus & Corringham - Love going there for a Sunday fixture.

Paul Bennett is over there now. Good bat.I play in SNEL though.

That would have been at there place. Yes, I played. That was when young Paul Walter 15 come in and top scored with 47. I batted with him at the end and come in and got 20 odd not out myself and then opened the bowling off a few paces. I was despatched by Joycie and then I come on at the top end (pavillion end) at the death and was a completely different bowler performing a lot better picking up a couple of wickets.

When do you find out your fixtures?

Should be fairly soon, as they've already annouced the cup game appointments.

I remember Mr Walter's innings, it certainly made a difference. If it wasn't for him, I could have been home a couple of hours earlier!!! A game of two halves to use a footie phrase. The 2nd innings was like it was on a different pitch, so different from your innings!

Were you the bowler with the knackered boots?

I was this man! Short run up not marked out because I had suffered from injuries last season.

I love those boots because I have lost my toe nail for the last 5 years but not last season!!

I will invest in some new boots though I think.

How long have you been umpiring for? You must get over to BCC. The home of cricket!

I qualified 3 years ago, but last season was my first full season on the SNEL panel. Whilst doing my exams I did Southend CC 2nd XI games for a few seasons for experience, including a game at Billericay!

I remember your first spell that day & will say nothing, but a different bowler from my end for your 2nd spell! I don't think I gave you anything, but nothing new there!!

Not a thing! Batsman then?

I will buy you a beer this season and we will talk - This being on a Friday night prior to a Saturday fixture ;)

My first spell was the worst I bowled all season - I rely on my consistency and I was consistently shoddy that day.

Did you enjoy your first full season?

Very much so. Nearly every game was played in the right spirit & was enjoyable to be a small part of. I had one VERY awakward game, but most people in the SNEL will know which one that was. It was a real shame as the game ended up a tense low scoring game. I think that was game I had done a fortnight before doing your game. Its all experience, I guess!

It is a shame when you get games that you think adults could sort amongst themselves but rely on an umpire to make decisions. It does sometimes get out of hand. It shouldn't be part and parcel but in the heat of the moment it is.

It was a one off to be fair, even if it was like a Sunday morning pub football match. The odd disagreement, but nothing that a quiet "Skip have a word please" doesn't solve.

Most games, yours especially have been a grin & makes it worthwhile doing. There are so many characters out there playing & umpiring that brings smiles to everybody. Unfortunately, we've lost one such umpiring character in Rex Clarke, who passed away in January.

If like me you have to give up the game, umpiring is the next best thing. You also get the best view too!!

Yeah Paul is our 1st team Captain, good player.

We've been doing nets at Billericay for the last few weeks, you've got a great set up over there.

Thanks.
Essex use it way too much in the Summer. It has been taken away from a few of us. The few that used to spend much time coaching and then Saturday night lash ups down there. Good that you like the setup.

I heard about Rex. That is a shame. A nice guy completely harmless. Obviously he was very old but great testament to the fact he turned up every week and umpired the game he loved.

R.I.P.

I will find out at the end of this month (28th) so be very scared!!!
