Memory Lane Origin of the PAK

Blimey what a journey the fella only asked about the origins of the PAK and we've ended up talking about Philomena and her mates, christ where did this week go. It was a great time to follow the blues in the 60s and 70s and all those who stood on and defended the north bank I salute every single one of you.

Yes what a great thread and so many memories....This alone makes the Zone such a great place ..where else would we of had the chance to reminisce so much..

Top stuff Guy's and Ladies....

This has been great, John - I couldn't agree more. Wouldn't it be nice to compile a Southend fans' memories book via Shrimper Publishing or a Zone publication? There's plenty of stuff we've assembled here and in other threads (eg The North Bank one from last April and people's away day memories of yesteryear that I've seen in various other threads - like last week's Aldershot one) and I'm sure that once we got going and sparked each other off, there'd be a wealth of material we could use.

That's right, they were from around Queensmere/Kingsmere area of Thundersley, I think Ollie had a brief liaison with "Doris".

The Sergents lived in Woodburn Close, Peter being the one I remember. Think the Shields lived in Parkfields or possibly Windsor Gardens. Great shout by Shrimpero on a book or at least a blog. I could cover a few days out in the early 80's that were shall we say, eventful.

Rob Jennings, I mentioned in the 'Chalkwell Fair' thread in the pub, and another thread. He was brave as a lion, and a top bloke.

I first met Ollie at Chalkwell Park, when I was about 13. He was a portly figure and looked really hard because of cropped hair, braces, jeans and DMs, but it turned out he was a big softy and a really nice bloke. I wound him up the first time I met him and he chased me on a drive-on Lawnmower. I got to know him after that, and he would always stop and talk to our gang. Sorry to hear that he has passed away. I used to love our little chats.

Peter Knight had a reputation. He was a Jekyl and Hyde character. I saw him erupt violently over nothing in the Bella Pais Greek restaurant that used to be in York Road. Mind you, the place was well known for that sort of thing. When at Colchester in the Seventies, he would steam into them on his own. He made me laugh there once, as he was going down a Skip and passing make-do weapons to the Southend mob.

Rob moved up to Norfolk many years ago, unfortunately he died of cancer a couple of years ago

I've been known to get misty eyed over a pint or 10 of beer. I agree great thread.

Thanks Al, I thought you'd know the denizens of that area of Thundersley. I think the eldest brother was Anthony who I was quite friendly with.

I always remember that after the gates went down, we stormed across the pitch to take residence in their North Bank. But as we got to the half way line, the groundsman tried to stab me and Carl Connors with his pitch fork. It seemed to rain all day. The Gillingham mob kept attacking down the East side to get their North Bank back, with no luck and loads arrested. Very boring 0-0, mainly due to conditions. I think Spud Taylor came on as a substitute. And then there was the famous fight with the Hells Angels outside a house near the ground, after a couple of their bikes were kicked over. Crazy day.

Remember that day well, think it was about midday, busting the gates down behind the banking, running down the terrace, down and across the pitch. Goundsman was all on his own standing in the centre circle, as we all ran past him he was swinging his fork around his head trying to catch us. We took and held their end, massive brick fight as we stopped them coming though the turnstiles and entering their end. Poor Gills fans could not get under cover and got soaked.

And at the start of the 2nd half, a dozen or so of our original north bank from the late 60's walked round the touchline into their south bank and tore into their mob. The story that circulated was that after we had drawn at Roots Hall to them in the F.A.Cup 1st round in 1969, our lads had a rough time at the replay and took their revenge on this eventful day. I remember watching it as the guys in question wer'nt kitted out in butchers coats, boots, harringtons etc, but sported casual gear so not to make them stand out.

I asked because you mentioned Ollie chased your gang. The Quality Street mob/gang were named after a tv advert about young pretend gangsters advertising the sweets. When Carl and his mates were pre Leigh Comm, they used to hang around Chalkwell Park and Ollie gave them that name.

No, I said Ollie chased me on his lawn mower, I was about 13, and I wouldn't let him get on with his work, I drove him mad. Later, He would talk to our gang as a friend. Carl was in my class at Belfairs, and was my friend and we used to hang out, and we would cross path's at football, but he wasn't in my gang. My gang was this one I mentioned with this post in the 'Local Gangs' thread, in the pub.

The S.A.M (Surrey Avenue Mob).
Consisting of Pavilion Drive, Manchester Drive, Norfolk Avenue, Suffolk Avenue, Kent Avenue and Surrey Avenue in Leigh.
Over powering enemies of the Treecot Mob (Treecotters) mentioned earlier. Was probably the largest toughest gang back in the day.
Shrimpero knows what I mean.

I reckon that would be worth the price of admission.

Is that Carl Connors you're referring to?

Yes Shrimpero. You need to read the whole conversation. Keep up with us buddy, you must be getting old like me, lol.

:smiles:... I am TSNB, I am (sighs). I'm still aching from playing 5-a-side on Thursday night and as you can see, Alcozheimer's is taking its toll on the mental side of things. To think that the public of West Cornwall are relying on me this w/e is more than a little disconcerting. :(

I'm sure the people of West Cornwall are in safe hand's. And still playing 5-a-side footie at your age, 'WOW'. You should donate your body to medical science.
