Wow, That brought back a few memories, a great gal she was!! Thanks very much for the photos.

Minka has been the long term partner of my pal Eddie S. She stayed in the Southend area, currently living with Eddie near Mountdale Gardens, Westcliff.
For anyone that has never been to a Wall-of-Death show, the noise was unbelievable. I think the bikes were made to be as loud as possible to attract customers elsewhere in the Kursaal grounds, which was amplified by riding across the wooden slats. The whole wooden construction would shake and move, which made it more exciting as you had the feeling it could break and fall down at any moment, but with you at the top in the watching gallery.

The Big Dady, Wow! gave me the chills looking at those photo's. A neighbor of mine that I used to walk to school with, his Dad was a chauffeur to Capt Moorhouse.
My friend and I used to go into the Kursaal early in the morning before they opened and search around the base of the rides for coins that would fall out of peoples pockets. We also would take our barrow into the car park where all the coaches were and pick up the empty beer bottles and take them to the Brittania pub to collect the deposits. Did quite well for a couple of ten yeard old kids. We both live in Beresford Mansions (Posh nane for a bunch of flats) that were actually on the outskirts of the Kursaal grounds ajacent to the car park. I might have to go get a drink to settle down ! Thanks again.

Les, Beresford Mansions are still there, it is one of the few remaining buildings left from those early Kursaal days. Looks like new, here are some pics, oh and The Britannia Pub is still there as well.

Ah, the Kingsway Theatre. Early '67 (not trying to spoil your joke!). Our first ever season in the 4th division!

I can't find it, but some time ago Firestorm posted a photo of the bill of that gig. Soon after the Kingsway was knocked down and became a Safeway Siupermarket.

As my mother was interviewing them i remember i sat on
Pete townsend knee. Oh er!! That must have been 69!!

And suddenly everything makes more sense.

Indeed,(since we're on a 70's kick here),I once had the misfortune of taking a group of extremly bored French teenagers around the Roman ruins of Colchester with an experienced guide.By the end of the tour, all the French kids had ****ed off in ones and twos to check out the High Street shops.Can't say I blame them.:winking:They much preferred Southend anyway.:thumbsup:

Blimey, great work there TBD, I've seen more bands at the Queens & Kursaal than I thought.

In the early days of the Zero 6 there was a regular gig night and among others I saw were Blackfoot Sue, Colin Blunstone, Geordie & I'm sure Nazareth. Also in the hot summer of 1976 Roots Hall hosted an all day festival with the likes of Micky Jupp, Budgie, possibly Eddie and the Hot Roda. Used to love Budgie.

Remember the Roy Orbison gig at TOTS well.Think you'll find one of those Lindersfarne gigs(can't remember which one) was switched to the Palace Theatre, where I saw them live with Ritchie C.(I was away at Uni during much of the time period here,otherwise would have seen a lot more).Also saw one or two of the Feelgoods gigs at The Kursaal but again can't remember which).Talking of RC he'll have seen quite a few of the concerts on this list, including the Feelgoods at The Esplanade and a lot of the stuff at The Cricketers and The Queens.

Yep.Remember that.No Eddie and the Hot Rods(IIRC) but Fairport Convention were on the bill, which was how I persuaded Margrethe,my Danish girlfriend at the time, to come down and sample the delights of Southend and Roots Hall.

Talking of the Mascot there, I don't remember that, it looks vaguely like the old Classic/Isoldo (I know that's not spelt right....looks very wrong!)....and gigs in Hadleigh...where was that? Harry mentioned on Morrisons site, but we moved to New Road in Hadleigh in '76 and the land where Safeways was built was derelict then.

Youre quite right about the Esseldo looking like the Mascot.(Same original owners I believe).There's an excellent VHS video(probably now available on DVD)on Southend's cinemas, which I have a copy of somewhere.Can't help you with the Hadleigh stuff I'm afraid, although the original Mrs S used to work there as a pt barmaid at The Ship back in the 70's.

The gigs in Hadleigh were held at The Kingsway Cinema, not where the Morrisons site is now, but where LookersLand Rover is now, directly in front of Homestead Court. The Kingsway closedaround 1969/70, and Safeways bought the site and built a supermarket on it which opened in 71/72. I remember doing a pub crawl round Hadlieigh for a birthday do, and some naughty boy kicked in one of the new windows in the new but not yet opened building.

Did anyone use to go to the Shrimpers on a Sunday night, Eddie and the Hot Rods were always brilliant when they played there. Remember seeing Wilko Johnson Post Feelgoods he still managed to do the Wilko walk on the small stage. I'm sure I saw the Feelgoods do a couple of tour warm ups down there as well. The Rockabilly Band Stray Cats played there as well that was a good night and Alison Moyets Band The Screaming Abdabs were always good when they played there.
