Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 0-1 AFC Wimbledon

He can't run. Also looking at the highlights, it looked like the ball was well on its way to Oxley but the wind suddenly held it up.
Agree with this. It’s a situation where someone needs to take responsibility and sadly neither of them did. FWIW I think Oxley should be the one taking responsibility here. He waits for the ball to come to him rather than go for it himself

I was totally against bringing Oxley back in....I also could totally see why it happened.....

In my opinion....90% of blame must lay with Turner.....

At the very least, if he’s leaving that to the GK he must block off the run of the forward physically until the situation is dealt with. You learn that as a kid in any academy.

Can anyone who believes Powell should stay in the job please answer the following questions :-

1. Why has the players that have had to step in whilst the injured players were out been dumped from the squad.?
2. Why does Powell persist in playing with 1 striker at home?
3. What does Turner bring to the team that Moore doesn't?
4. Why does Powel feel the need to make at least 2 changes each match even if players are not injured?

I could go on but can someone who still supports the management style of our manager please answer the above?

1. Because the injured players aren’t injured anymore?
Not exactly supporting Powell here but what else should he do
with first choice players.

There were signs today that Lennon and Kiernan could be a good centre-back pairing in a back-four or playing Kiernan in a role just in front of the back-four in a diamond system.

The biggest problem is our midfield and CP keeps going light in there with the likes of Dieng and Mantom.

I always feel your midfield should be judged on what they do in either box, as well as in the centre of the park and ours don't do anything in either.

No saving tackles like Lenny and no driving runs like Yearwood in his early days.

I think we should try Moore at right back, Lennon and Kiernan centre backs, and Hart left back.

I like Demi, personally, so maybe Moore and Lennon with Kiernan just in front a la Timlin/Lenny.

I'm also thinking Moore is going back at the end of the season, presumabely.

In fairness, he's just come back from long term injury and he's playing in a woeful side.

When I mentioned Lennon and Kiernan, I was thinking more in the medium to long term than the next game.

Again I do agree with this. I just think in that instance with Oxley being so far off his line that Turner has assumed he’s going to claim it. Neither do and it’s disastrous. Just awful all round

Ron has got to decide if paying CP off, will be cheaper than the drop in gate revenue if we go down?.

It's not just CP though, doubt Ron would want to keep the two assistants either. We cannot assume we would come straight back up so could be more than one season with lower revenue.

Clarky made a really good point before the game about players taking ownership in a relegation battle and that goal is exactly what is lacking in the side. Summed it up perfectly.

I fail to understand why Powell put Oxley back in and why some zoners wanted him back in. Yes Bishop has made some mistakes, but he has made some fantastic saves too. It doesnt help when the majority of the team infront of you are playing ****. Hopeless team selection, hopeless tactics from Powell.
I personally prefer Nathan
Can’t disagree more. The fact that our club captain wasn’t wearing the armband on his return today speaks volumes for his leadership qualities that some have tried to convince me we missed. Yes Bishop has made a few mistakes but tell me of a goalkeeper that doesn’t. Bringing Oxley in from the cold in a game of this magnitude was a mistake and it’s proved costly. To add to that, for me Bishop certainly has more potential and in my opinion isn’t far from being at Oxley level as it is.
i think Nathan has amazing potential

Oxley 3 punched a keepable ball straight forwards towards 2 strikers and got away with it, followed by...that moment, which now we have moved beyond things being depressing, was quite funny in retrospect.

Demi, 6 was not targeted by the opposition due to poor defending like Elvis gets...was not fit enough to add to the attack like he can

Lennon 6 Fairly steady with a couple of odd decisions that could have turned out worse without luck

Turner 1 Sorry but, the opposition spent the second half sending balls over his shoulder because they knew they would get something from it every time. Calamitous decision to leave the ball for Ox whether there was a shout or not. If everyone is fit, he should not be playing. If you only have enough to play a back 5 if he is fit, play a back 4 instead. Turner should have played for England more in his pomp, but now, sadly...no.

Kiernan. 6 ok. No major slipups.

Hart 8 couldn't question effort, a few decent balls, a willing runner, was probably a 7 really but I am saying 8 just so he can get a slightly higher mark than Hyam because he was slightly better than Hyam today.

Hyam 7 tidy, keen, didn't really let himself down. I remember 1 pretty poor ball but aside from that good

DIeng 5. When DIeng turned up I thought wow...class above. Now I wonder how he keeps his place when I haven't seen him break into jog since Bradford.

Mclaughlin 6, would have been 7 but did miss our best chance. Worked hard, no real magic but I feel sorry for him when he often sits on the bench when others who don't put in the shifts that he does stroll around losing in front of him.

Bunn 6 good flashes here and there but what was unusual from me watching him previous times, didn't seem as determined off the ball as he used to. Maybe not fit enough yet...maybe doesn't care any more.

Cox 7 what was he offered today?...exactly...but kept working hard and annoying the opposition like he does.

Yearwood....came on for the wrong midfielder in my eyes, but in the few minutes he had, showed what a bit of willingness speed and urgency can do against the bottom side.

Kelman….sadly only got the one shot off which was a poor one...spent the rest of the time trying to find good positions without the ball coming near. I still want to see a lot more of this lad...as there is something about him that says to me....not only good enough to play, but too good for us.

Kightly...managed 1 ball that nearly caused some danger but ultimately looked like what he has pretty much always looked like since returning...a footballer who's best days are long behind. Sad but true about another talent that was once so bright but probably been eaten by time and many sad injuries.. Terrible corner when we really needed a good ball in the mixer at the death.

Powell 8 all 8 of these points are for his playing days at Roots Hall and his general ability to seem a nice bloke...if it were marked on his 'motivation' 'team selection' and 'tactics' I am afraid it would be zero...and that really hurts me to say....really hurts me.

BTW, that was a pretty good turnout from Wimbledon, I thought.

More than usual for them.

Saw the team lineup and immediately thought it reeked of desperation by a manager trying to keep his job, both Grapevine and myself got it right, Grapevine when he said there wouldnt be a player from the youths chosen, and myself when i chose a 442 lineup but said that being said CP would go for a 7-2-1 lineup. You can call it 3-4-3 but there was 7 defensive players 2 wingers and 1 striker ,A team without flare, was doomed right from the start. GO NOW CP ,DO THE RIGHT THING ,GO WHILE PEOPLE STILL REGARD YOU AS A LEGEND AT THE CLUB.

Make them earn their shirts... JD has done nothing since his return to justify Elvis being dropped completely from the match day squad. He was as inept today as he was prior to the injury.

He'll always be a legend.
Maybe, the player will outlive the manager, but for the time spent at the club, quality and service etc he's the best we've had so far.
