As our new management team looks to get its rescue act underway, what better place to go than to a ground we’ve never lost at?
We lead Fleetwood 3-2 in head-to-head League matches with the majority (6) having been draws.
Are the authorities sending the right man for the job? Well it’s Peter Wright from Southport, an official from the Liverpool FA. This is his first season as a League referee and his first Southend match as a referee, although he has run the line in the past at Accrington, twice.
He began his refereeing in the Southport-based Craven Minor Football League. He spent time in the referee academy programme run by Liverpool County FA at both Everton and Liverpool Football Clubs, alongside a spell with Durham County FA whilst completing his studies at university in the north east.
He had a couple of seasons in the National League, culminating in the play-off semi-final between Tranmere and Ebbsfleet and now in this, his first Football League, season he has shown a very average 90 yellows and 6 reds from his 31 matches.
It will be his third visit of the season to Fleetwood. In the first, a 2-2 draw against Leicester U21, he sent off Cian Bolger. In the second, a 3-0 Boxing Day win over Doncaster, they didn’t risk Bolger and left him on the bench.
What the referee lacks in experience, the rest of the team have aplenty. Assistants are Graeme Fyvie from Sunderland and Gary Hilton from Upholland, near Wigan. Fourth Official, with his 10th Southend appointment is Ian Dudley from Nottingham.
