So when does it get announced that we're playing Ipshite away as the first game of the season?

Unlikely. Norwich cannot play at home same time as Ipswich, Norwich are away 1st game of the premier league season w/e 9th Aug so Ipswich very likely to be at home that weekend meaning Ipswich would be away 1st game w/e 3rd Aug.

I work with an Ipswich fan and we realised over the last couple of seasons were usually at home and away the same weekends - possibly to do with neither of us able to play at home the same weekend as Colchester - not sure whether anyone can confirm?

No, the 1939-1940 season was suspended. 38-39 was Ipshites first season in the league and we were their first opponents.

Ah, this sounds like the red hot rumour I heard from several sources last Wednesday that West Ham's first game was Watford away. They in fact are at home to Manchester City.
