Question Should we stick with Phil Brown?

Should we keep Phil Brown as manager regardless of what division we're in?

Brown showed tonight that he is not the man to take us back to the Football League. He was far too slow to realise that Plan A wasn't working, no different to the back end of his first spell with the Club. No Plan B either.

No thanks. Olayinka is still sitting by the side of the dugout. ANG, our only attacking player with any confidence is, well, where is he? And Akinola not even on the bench, Greg Halford coming on ahead of Acquah.

I know he's been in the job no time at all. But I also haven't erased his previous tenure from memory and I know he was never the answer to this. Even in a promotion season his team barely ever scored more than 2 a game.

Personally, there are better options out there. Currie, Coughlan, even Barrett.

I really don't want this club to keep making the same mistakes that we have done for the past five years.

Woah there, calm it Kermit. Not blaming him at all however when a team isn't scoring the man to turn to was not to turn to a man who struggled to get a much superior squad to score. Ron is fully to blame for it all!

You need someone who knows the lower league s ,the general attitude from Ron even brown is don't worry we just buy our way back to the football league
I don't fancy brown to take the job remember he is partly
Responsible for the situation we are in

I'd keep him, if he'll stay. He's got the experience to inspire young players, the kind we're going to need to get out of the NL at the 1st attempt..

If Phil Brown can operate without the large wages and 'name' players, and if he can concentrate on just Southend Utd, then I would stick with him. The only possible fly in the ointment is his choice of wardrobe, at the moment it's on a par with Mr Molesley's white trainers and ShrimperZone just doesn't need that distraction at the moment. All that said, I'm not convinced his ego will let him stay, we shall see.

Whether he stays or goes I'm not fussed. All I would like is decisions to be made as early as possible, but recent history has shown most of our problems are as a result of making changes late, playing catch up, not preparing properly, wasting money resources and ultimately gaining a terrible reputation. All of this does not bode well for next season.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I wonder if RM regrets not going for Currie now?

I would say yes we should.

We have chopped and changed manager for the last 3 or 4 years and it has got us no where. I would have gone Currie before MM however we didnt. Now we have PB so i would stick and try to build again, especially if he is prepared to work without the bog names, big salaries etc that he had before.

As much as I would like Currie there is no assurance he would be a success and i guess that goes with any appointment, so while we have PB in the building lets use him. He can have Fagan as his assistant and hopefully groom him to take over in a couple of years. A succession plan is sometimes a good option as you can then keep that continuity.

Maybe Macca / JW will join the back room too who knows

The appointment is a typical Ron ploy so he can sell you the dream for next season and deflect critism from himself and the spiral of decline. Can we do better than PB.... with Ron's track record of DD and promises probably not.

The key to getting out back in the league will be signing players who are good enough and who can be moulded into a team.

We start with Akinola, Ferguson, Nathanial-George, Walsh and Phillips under contract.

One or two of the others may be worth keeping and want to stay.

In my opinion Brown may not have the knowledge about what’s required and the abilities of individuals after being out of the country for so long and not operating at non league level before.

For the first time in my life I have watched every game of the season thanks to iFollow and £430 spent. PB has muddied the waters for me. When this thread opened I voted immediately for him to stay because he did well for us in the past and we need stability. But somehow he has managed to make things worse.

MM was sacked because he was too defensive in mindset and couldn't set us up to score goals. BUT he had finally made us tough to score against and from what I saw every game our players were giving their all and playing for him - they just weren't good enough in attack. Somehow PB has lost that - I don't blame him, he only had six games. I think had he had sixteen games he would have sorted it out, but I'm surprised that he was unable to at least continue our disciplined defensive tactics. Did he not listen to Fagan? Did Fagan not advise him fully? How can he have sent out a team against our local rivals in such a vital game with such lack of fire and passion?

I suppose we will be starting almost from scratch next season with maybe Hart, Egbri, Walsh and ANG continuing. But we can't afford to start the season badly. So should PB stay or not......

I just dunno mates.

Phil Brown is very much for himself. The obvious reason he didn't sign a 3 year contract is he will wait and see if any offers come in at the end of the season, now that he's back in the English football world. If none come in, he will probably sign up for 1 or 2 seasons.

I said when Brown came in it could backfire because (like last time with the JPT final) he wasn't going to have a clue who any of the players were, that's exactly what's happened but I'm still torn over whether he should be here next year if he wants the job. His recruitment is an issue but we're still going to have a crap reputation next year and a 'name' like Brown might convince some players to give us a shot, he'll also make sure we're one of the fittest sides in the league which will go a long way. There's also the benefit of it meaning we'll start pre-season on time rather than weeks after everyone else whilst Ron dithers.
