''SUPER STEVE ARNOLD IN GOOAAAALLLL''.

For me it’s the stuff he cuts out high up that makes him different to the rest. Time and time again he gets amongst it and normally catches. Most keepers are decent shot stoppers and so is he but this is the first time we’ve had one that stops it before it happens. Dracula up at Harrogate was the worst ever for this but in this rough and tumble League I genuinely wouldn’t swap Arnie for Bentley who’s currently getting splinters. Worth a goal start every game for this part of his game alone, in the end the oppo gives up the aerial stuff whereas last year it was there plan ‘a’ with nervous Nerys in goal!

…….now you just think, that’s Arnies!….we used to think, oh s hit!

He was a bit good even before he joined us. But we are lucky as he seems to have reached his best and most consistent form.

Prior to this season I asked two of my Northampton-supporting mates if Arnold was any good. Neither rated him and said he was prone to dropping catches and too rash when charging outside the box.

Then again, the same two said that Peter Gilbert was the best left-back in League 2 and were gutted when he left to join us...

That said, I guess confidence plays a big part when you're a goalkeeper and changing clubs can be a reset if things are going wrong. I'm sure he will be delighted with the song and long may it continue.

Keepers are only as good as what is Infront of them.

Oxley had a couple of class season's for us before the wheels came off.

Mildenhall was shocking at first before he came good.

If a keeper doesn't have structure Infront of him, he simply can't be good. And equally if the defenders don't trust the keeper.

You must be too young to have seen Simon Royce.

I am 29 so I know who he is, but never saw him play in a Southend shirt
He was a keeper who looked great playing behind a defence featuring Keith Dublin.

Arnold’s history hints at him being a confidence keeper. Hopefully he can ride the current feel good factor and wave of confidence for a good few more years. He’s currently looking like our best keeper signing since Mildenhall.

I’m not sure I fully agree with the last part. I think it’s fair to say that Steve Arnold’s been a pretty good performer for the entire season yet we’ve only really sorted the defence out in the last 6 weeks or so.

The ability of a keeper is more obvious in a side with a weaker defence because they have more to deal with.

am with YB on this one - Arnold's performances have definitely improved since the early part of the season, i was a bit worried about him early on. The Chesterfield home game for example (and thankfully how long ago does that seem now!) he stayed rooted to his line for balls across the box that led to goals - I'm sure he'd be claiming those now. He looks a lot more confident and it's showing in his decision-making, long may it continue.

Mildenhall are you sure?
Also known as ‘Spildy’ for a reason!
