2022-23 Southend United Retained / Released List

Kev has indicated a squad of about 25 in a perfect world. Wants to keep a tight-nit group.
i guess the best teams, most successful teams have two players per position, plus some versatility. So a first team squad of around 25/26 would cover those bases. What we cant afford is to have a large squad of players some of whom arent considered good enough. This release list is spot on really and when you look at the money saved in getting rid of 12 and maybe only needing to bring in 6 or 7 (assuming the 5 offered contracts sign) then its been a good and worthwhile process. If the new players come in are of the sae quality and work ethic as Cardwell, Powell, Husin, Kensdale, Wood etc then we are defo in with a shout next season

The most promising thing about that list, is imagining the amount of money we’ve just shaved off the wage bill.

Best of luck to everyone departing, and genuinely excited to see the incomings now.

There are 12 names on the retained list, with an additional 5 being offered contracts. I’d say from that 17, only 14 of them make up a current first team squad, so how many do we think we’ll be looking at bringing in over the summer? 10?

Bridge, Husin and Wood are our only midfielders, so would expect an influx in that area, for starters.
Agreed.

I would presume the likes of Collin, Coker, Benton etc would be earmarked for a new "B Team" and called up to the First team if required, or if they are "pulling up trees"

So yeah I'd say perhaps up to 7/8 required (depending on those with offers), inclusive of one or two top quality Prem/Championship loans in the mix to compliment.

It’s was the right decision. The youngest we have kept, they will be part of B side, with an option to be send to Conference North or South side on loan & become their keys players & get valuable games time.

Fairly decent decisions, harsh on Leon Davies, did alright I thought. He even moved his partner down here giving up his old flat and renting anew down here

doesn’t say if any have been offered a new contract etc, so can we assume they have not been?
If that true, I just hope the club help him out in a way.

Presumably we'll also announce soon which (if any) youth team players are being offered contracts? That may bolster the b-team a bit too.

I'd imagine that's shifted a good chunk of money off the wage bill as well.

Looking forward to what the football department can do with that same budget. But with the backing of proper scouts, thorough analysis and DD.

We're on our way.

That was in the announcement. Coker and Davis were third year scholars and have been offered pro deals.

We’ll need to wait and see what second years are offered third years and what schoolboys are offered/accept scholarships.

It presumably means the remaining third years Jimmy Wallace, Tommy Lambourne, Demaray Anyadike, Cameron Brown, Ergis Shala, Jamie Grossart, Bobby Unwin and Tendi Quamini aren’t being offered anything.

Very happy with that list. Leon Davies definitely had some good attributes, but didn't do quite enough to justify an extension imo.
It also feels great to know that we will be making some early signings rather than reading about how we are looking at trialists in late July!
Can't wait to see what players Kev, Stan and John have up their sleeves.

There wasn't any "wtf???" shocks leaping off the page, can see the logic in all the releases. A (much needed) big clearout, and also some bigger earners off the books.
