Essex of course!
What's the situation here? I'm orf to Gatwick soon, should I make other travel arrangements?

Not yet, the RMT have voted for action but awaiting talks from NR to maybe curtail them (which sadly I can't see happening). No dates announced as strike days yet.

What is the strike action about? Money? Conditions? Guards?

A few things. We've had no payrise for 3 years and bonuses have ended (this despite the senior execs awarded themselves a £15K payrise). They want to reduce the maintenance staff by 2000 or so and roster them on virtually permanent nights/weekends, not to mention the spectre of Great British Rail on the horizon which will no doubt cause another re-org (I've just been through 2 in 3 years) and redundancies.

Not to mention they want to shut virtually all ticket offices and remove station staff to help the elderly/disabled.

Ouch! That reads like an agenda for disaster and full mutiny on the tracks. I am with you Comrades, enough is enough.

Just seen that - substantially more. No idea why.

A friend of mine has recently passed all his training with Greater Anglia and now out on his own.

He tells me their hours are also more than other companies. I believe he has to stay 2 or 3? years before he could transfer.

I think it is terrible that almost all stations no longer have a “ticket office” or someone in the ticket station for advice etc.
I travelled from Upminster a couple of weeks back and no one was around to help a couple of elderly people who were struggling with the ticket machine.

Thats one of the cuts that NR want. To cut the majority of station staff and close ticket offices so it'll all have to be done online or via machines.

Back on 'track'

Gatwick Flyer doesn't operate any more, is that right?
That went bust a few years back now. We used to use them quite frequently but the last few years the quality definitely dropped as did the vehicles . There are plenty of cab firms who specialise in airport drops now isn't there

I was against smart cards and used the ticket office but as you say they cut back on staff causing massive queues and they were often closed so ended virtually forced to use the smart card to avoid lateness for work
