Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1-2 Torquay United

We are what we are, now a NL middling level team, that's never going to splash the cash that's needed. to get out unless we get really lucky

My initial thought for the time being is that Wreh MUST start over Cosgrave.

Oh and also, does Tom Clifford even want to be a professional footballer any more? He doesn’t look up for it at all these days.
The issue I think is with Wreh, is that he likes to drive from wide ... and two from Mooney, Powell and Bridge all occupy that space, whereas Cosgrove plays through the middle giving us better balance up top. However, he doesn't seem to have the same presence/quality as Murphy, Hyde or Cardwell.

We need these guys back..... again, 25 shots, 2 on target, 1 goal suggests that.

For what it’s worth I think we showed far too much respect to Torquay today.
A back 3 with wingbacks wasn’t the right choice, amplified by a lack of plan B when it became apparent that the formation was an issue. Torquay worked far harder to stop us playing out from the back which forced Kensdale to run out with the ball more than he would of liked.

We needed to be playing more on the front foot from the off.
Easy to say now but a back 4, with miley and fonguck allowing Mooney to pull the strings in the middle. Bridge & Powell giving the width and pace to pull them about may have worked better, and certainly would of had us on the front foot more.

Oh well. Barnet will be doubting themselves after their shock result today.

UTB

PS, I have to say that, despite my reservations, Hobson outshone Lomas big time today and it will be Louis to give way to Kacper next week.

No one has mentioned a standout torquay player yet. I'm not sure I'd take any of their players over ours

It's disappointing but all not doom and gloom.

With our best team out we can give anyone a go.

Arnold
Ralph
GSM
Hobson/Kensdale
Lopata
Lomas
Miley

Mooney
Bridge/Powell

I didn’t think Torquay particularly played dirty and I didn’t think the ref was terrible. They were another typical NL team (and an average one) playing typical NL tactics.

We had goodness knows how many shots and Torquay had a couple that they scored from. That was the main issue. Oh and set pieces (again….)

Were we awful? No not really, but I wouldn’t want Powell or Mooney spending my bag of change at the funfair on one of those games where you need to hit a target to win a prize.

Wreh and Bridge to start next game ideally, Kacper in and let’s get one of these strikers fit ..

It is disappointing but putting things into perspective we are creating chances. I'm sure sooner or later we will give someone a right good smashing. At least, we live in hope lol

What we need most ..... is a medical team!

The serious teams in our division piled in the goals today. I am a big fan of Maher and I like the youthful nature of our side but in this league you need a bit of nouse. We are too naive, too lightweight up top and have very little actual goal threat in our side due to a lack of composure and football intelligence. Unless we find a way to score some goals mid table mediocrity beckons. Bridge and Wreh to start next game.

Not ready the other reports. Not seen us dominate a team like that ever. We must have had the ball in the area at least 40 or 50 times. In the second half we had it there nearly every time we got the ball, and aside from the fluke goal, when we lost it we picked it back up before they got into our final third.

They defended the 6 yard box brilliantly though. Number of times we dribbled through and they blocked the low ball at the near post was huge. Surely we could have put a player there ourselves to give a little nudge and clear a path for a tap in. The goal we got was from a high ball strangely.

Collin - 5
Clifford -5
GSM - excellent 8
Hobson -6
Lomas -7. Passing poor on his left foot, but extra mark for playing on the wrong side and nearly scoring still. Plus a good run in the first half
Kensdale -8 best game I’ve seen from him
Miley - 8 motm. Just class
Fonguck -7
Mooney -7
Cosgrave -5
Powell -5

Subs - bridge 8, Demi 6 and Wreh 6

The injured strikers would have all made a difference today. We showed we have a defence and midfield way above mid league teams in this division. If the forwards can do the same we will comfortably make the play offs.

No, your agenda of assuming we must be **** after a bad result whilst ignoring all the progress and positive steps the club has made.

We’re wrong for blaming the loss of 3 first choice strikers for our league position when we’ve got the third best defence in the league? Okay.

Are you related to one of the defenders?

It's just, 3rd best defence equates to 13th in the national league behind powerhouses such as Wealdstone, maidstone and woking.Screenshot_20220903-200003_Samsung Internet.jpg

Time wasting was evident from VERY early on and is the scourge of lower league/non league football.
I just don’t get why refs can’t stop it early doors. A single warning to the team captain, followed by a yellow card will soon put paid to it.
Even better, include the warning in the pre match talk to the teams?
Do we do it? of course, but some teams really do take it to the extreme and it’s not good enough.

I’d prefer it if refs clamped down on it quickly, and if we end up losing some games because we can’t hold out then so be it - I’d rather take our chances.

A back 3 with wingbacks wasn’t the right choice, amplified by a lack of plan B when it became apparent that the formation was an issue.
The formation didn’t seem to be an issue for the last half hour when we scored one and it could have been 3. If plan B was to bring in Bridge that seemed to work well.
Torquay worked far harder to stop us playing out from the back which forced Kensdale to run out with the ball more than he would of liked.
Kensdale was signed for his ability to bring the ball out of defence. It is why he’s in the side.

Oh. And that number 10 was a @@@@. As was the keeper who joined him in the “fun”. Thankfully the rest of their squad didn’t and if anything some looked like they felt the two of them were twunks.
He was the same with Aldershot when he came here last season ..... an absolute top level tosser! All mouth, no ability.

Nope. Just have perspective.

Would we score more goals with Murphy, Cardwell and Hyde fit?

Impossible to say.

Would we have conceded the goals we have with them in the side?

You are fixated on the 3rd best defence line when they conceded 2 today and 2 against Eastleigh

Hmmm, going to have to watch the highlights of this game again. My takeaway from being there was we created limited “chances” but we were blasting shots from all angles with no real threat. Perhaps I missed the chances because I was getting too annoyed!
