Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

Not going to comment on the game too much but I thought we wasn’t fully at the races today, and not helped by yet another sh it ref.

What I will say is what an amazing day out, and to share it with friends old and new, and especially with my son, will live long in the memory.

Spoke to a few Oldham fans who genuinely seem a good bunch.

Onwards and upwards Shrimpers 💙🦐

Oh and f ** k the National League

Football is football. It’s shattered me today. So disappointed but so proud of our club and the team.

I just want to give immense credit to both sets of supporters. I thought both sets were brilliant and really made the occasion. By far the best of the three Wembley visits for atmosphere and I think a huge shout out to the Oldham fans is due as from our end they were very good and I think that inspired our own to respond.

But overall I think this just shows that since The Rat the club is United again and hearing 29,000 Southend fans in unison was something I will take away from this day as a huge positive. Until next season… let’s rest!

… oh and some of you please stop trying to find scapegoats! It just wasn’t meant to be today.

Hello

Oldham fan in peace.

Have enjoyed posting and reading this forum over the last few weeks.

A few points.

Your fan base is amazing. I know we always have good support, but today to see 2 huge, noisy and passionate supporters packing a Wembley made it a real occasion.

As for the game…..I have never been as mentally exhausted after a game of football ever. My heart rate was at 136 bpm in the last 5 minutes.

Also before the game I said that it was close to call, but felt that if we played to our best we would win. I think we didn’t play as well as I’d hoped - but that was more due to how you played I think, and you nullified the threat that we’d used so well in the previous 2 games.

The first goal knocked us - and I didn’t feel in the game for next 20 minutes, but then we didn’t play get more control and as stated we missed some good opportunities (and how Fondop missed that one near the end of the half I will never know).

Second half we got the penalty and I thought that would spur us on, but from our POV it felt like you were the better team for the rest of the half - even though we did have two good opportunities to score.

The early goal in ET seemed to floor us…team looked out of gas, our supporters were deflated and flat. Couldn’t see how we would get back in the game….and then 2 minutes of football that was out of the blue changed everything.

We are delighted to have won it, but I cannot hand on heart say it was well deserved. It was a close, tight game, and probably a draw and the penalty lottery would have been a fair outcome.

However after 34 years of waiting, I will be selfish and say I don’t care, and the memory of today - sharing it with my wife, my 7yo son and 80 year old Dad will be cherished forever.

The posts on here have been heartfelt, honest, and generous to Oldham - and I genuinely wish you success next season. There is not another team in the NL that deserves promotion more next season.

I will leave you to your angst and disappointment.

Yours in sport
As a Barnet fan at the game, I love more how, at the end of the day, we all respect each other, no matter what side of the fence we may be on.. To me that's more important than the game itself.

To all Southend fans today will hurt few days but as Kevin Maher once said this club never died so bring in on next season let’s gets behind him in the summer go again Southend till we die to all shrimpers fans happy summer

Well what a **** end to a **** day!

Couldn’t get fries anywhere all the ****e vendors outside Wembley didn’t seem to have any.

Got in and sat in the ‘family’ area, thought that would be good. And in fairness all the rows in front were good as gold, it was the absolute scum ****s behind us and their kids that have obviously been dragged up. Throwing food/drink and spitting at my kids, then banging on the top of the roof, even though multiple people asked them to stop as it was upsetting my youngest daughter and the autistic girl sat in front of us.

Some idiot gobbed off at my best mate and said “it’s what footballs like, I can say **** it’s football!” No you thick **** that’s why we sat in the family area to be away from ****s like you! The kids continued throughout and one of the wives then put her hands on my eldest daughter after she asked one of her little brats to stop, which then got my wife’s back up.

These absolute thunder ****s have put off 3 young supporters, potentially more by their vile behaviour! Embarrassing, and the parents were worse than the kids, exactly why their kids behave like brats!

Anyway, absolutely heartbreaking! To be leading twice and then throw it away in that fashion really did make it more painful!

I won’t go into the performance as a whole because I am still too wound up.

Hats off to all the players, coaches and fans (except the idiots behind us) who put in so much effort throughout the season to get us to a point I never imagined was possible! Shame the dream wasn’t to be.

I think that was our opportunity, it will be tough to get out of this league, but I never thought we would have got to today.

Oldham looked like a team/squad that had the kitchen sink thrown at it to get promotion.
They had superior players and had recruited the manager who has done this multiple times.
We are in year 1 of a rebuild after being reduced to a pile of rubble of a club.
This play off run has been wonderful and that night at FGR will be hard to match let alone the Rochdale scenes.
Can't wait for next season...and its been a while since I've said that lol.

That sounds horrible, sorry that the kids in particular had to to deal with that.

Couldn't be prouder of the team and the club. It was a painful way to lose, after bossing most of the game, but our season's success cant be defined by 2 minute lapse in concentration! Oldham, to their credit, are free scoring and they took those chances!

When you think that in June last year there was s good chance our club would have been gone, and a year later we are part of a record breaking crowd and a fantastic advert for the 5th tier, you cant help but be proud of the players, Kev and the coaching staff, the backroom teams and of course COSU ! And what a turnout at Wembley!!

We missed out on promotion today, in the most painful way, but we will come back stronger and with a full pre-season and a couple of signings i am confident that we will be up there again.

And for the record, I thought Taylor was man of the match today.
Great post. Agree 100% even down to the MOM

Ref was ridiculously against us, it seemed there were similar fouls going on both ends but they got rewarded every free kick possible whereas we hardly got any. Such is life... seen it too many times.

Son so disappointed but still such a great day out, he got so involved and I'm mostly proud of him as an up-and-coming Shrimper!

After today I think Bonne's got to go, I have been full of praise when he's deserved it but I do think my 8 year old has a stronger shot that him.

Ultimately do think Oldham were the better team today, they threw away some stupid chances too, but at least they had them, and was poor from our defense to let them through, albeit Taylor is brilliant and I still rate Goodliffe despite his **** up today.

God we were so close. Hope we have a decent run of it again next year.

Love to everyone 💘 fans, players and staff.

Just got home. Credit to the players and management for getting this far but I feel its missed opportunity considering we were 2-1 up with 15 mins to go, should atleast see it through to penalties. This will hurt for few days I'm sure and in hindsight it probably would of served us better to been knocked out against Rochdale...... I fear a hangover going into next season, in this league you can't afford a slow start to get automatic. This was our opportunity to get out of this ****e league and we ****ed it up the wall! Let's hope we start fast next season so we won't have to worry about play offs.

Just got back home to Rochford.

The day was memorable and disappointing at the same time.

For me, and I said it at the time, the match swung when the teams came out of the tunnel for the second half.

Oldham, Sprinted out as one and into a physio routine, We strolled out in dribs and drabs, no sense of focus or urgency, as though they'd just had their half time orange playing for the Dog and Duck on a Sunday morning.

I said to family around me, we are going to get caught cold at the start of this half, a minute and a half later it's 1 all! I was fuming!, and this has to be sorted out by the management team next season and it is not the first time this season we take 5 minutes to realise the 2nd half has started!

The Fans, both sets were excellent and the atmosphere for the majority of the afternoon was electric.

I thought the ref was atrocious. Apparently you can legally wrestle a centre forward in red to the ground repeatedly, but touch someone in blue, that constitutes a free-kick.

I thought at 2-1 we would manage the second half, but we only managed half of that.

I hope what we have achieved this season, the majority of our fans will appreciate it, especially the timescale it has been achieved in. Also I hope any player that we negotiate with in the close season, will see everything about the club is on the up, on and off the pitch and want to be a part of it.

Congratulations to Oldham, another club whose fans are a credit to them.
I want to be partying like them at the end of next season, but as Champions not have to go through the play offs!
