Post-Match Thread and Ratings Oldham FC 3-2 Southend Utd

I felt the team looked a tad "leggy". We have played more league minutes than any other team in the league. More extra time than Oldham. I think this showed. I thought Hopper was not as effective as he ought to have been. I thought Bonne did not make the same impact as in previous games. He took quite a clattering, and was not a quick after that. There were plenty of tired legs..but BIG hearts to a man. Who honestly thought we would be there? We took the hard route...and I am proud of every member of the team. We do need some improvements in certain positions. Hopefully we can actually sign targets that will improve us this coming season (no embargo) , get a proper pre-season in, get fitness levels up, and work on closing games out (and not just by sitting back). We lost too many points in the last 10 minutes. We go again next season...but have to aim for automatic as champions.
If we are serious about promotion we should ignore the cup competitions. Yes Sittingbourne was bad but would we have cared if we had won on Sunday? Only one goal next season and it's not the FA Trophy

Way back in the 89/90 season - we had a team that should have got promoted (or at the very least make it to the POs) - but Cup runs in the League and FA Cups took their toll and a 65 game season was too much and we missed out on all three fronts.

Next season we were knocked out early in both cups and focused on the league and went up.

Last few seasons when we weren't in the league mix, I wanted Oldham to take the FA Trophy seriously as it was a chance or a day out and maybe a trophy. This season when we lost 2-0 away at Stockton in the FA Trophy it was a tad embarrassing but at the end of the day its a distraction you don't need.

Does anyone else think the Oldham chairman looks like an extremely low rent Junior Soprano?

We love Frank. He is the most genuine, generous and full of life character you could meet.

Yes, at times, you feel he could have walked straight of the set of Pheonix Nights - but after years and years of terrible, selfish, destructive ownership he brings a genuine sense of hope and is someone that cares about the team and the town.

I'll forgive him the odd toe-curling moment.

That didn't answer my question.

I contacted Curtis with a "I paid £3.75 for postage and it's not here!" email. Their response ....
Good morning,
After looking into this for you, I can see that it was the Oldham v Southend Vanarama fixture. As advised online in the product information, this programme was a pre-order due to be shipped June 2nd/3rd hence why you haven't received it yet.
Kind regards"

I don t remember reading about pre-order...but if that's true...my error. At least I will have a prestine copy. But I got the order in and it was confirmed on the Tuesday before. Plenty of time for them to get them delivered. £3.75 is a HUGE cost for such a long postal service period.

Also - has a slight error unless I forgot who we played in the 1990 EFL Cup final.

Interesting that fans expect the directors to cough up to improve the team for the 30,000 Southend till I die supporters. If each one of them coughed up just £20 there would be a nice fund of £600,000. £50 would give £1,500,000.
Agreed. Hopefully this upcoming membership scheme gives the 25,000 "I would have a season ticket but..." attendees at Wembley a chance to put more money in the club next season and help the club increase the playing budget.

I think that we (Oldham) looked more leggy than you from about 80 minutes all the way through to the start of the second half of ET.

Almost nobody in the Oldham end saw where the equaliser would come from in ET… but then once Norwood produced that moment (after a injury hit two years and many feeling he wasn’t worth the reported wage….but I think he is the only player who could do that) it changed energy levels for both sides.

Lots of our fans blaming Goodliffe or Hayes but that was a quality touch and finish by Norwood. The energy then swung from us to you.

Bonne had the easiest chance of the match at 2-1 in the first half of the extra time but bottled it and took a needles and bad touch. Then Walker wasn't cool enough to finish his chance in the second half of extra.

Couple of things to look out for. Your 16 when Walker was on that run. Seem to just give up. Then just moments later we had 7 men in your half when you hoofed to Norwood. We ended up with a 3v3 situation whilst 2-1 up in extra. I wondered why Ralph (our LB) hand not swept round behind Goodliffe and Taylor. Only after watching the highlights I could see he was distracted by the Oldham lad unmarked and out on our left.

We paid the price for for finishing line syndrome, lets put it to bed with 3rd naive excitement. With tired legs all it takes is one long ball and someone with a touch of composure and it all changed.

Having said that I had great day with great bunch. A couple long term friends came back from overseas as well. We didn't fancy the train queue so dived in one of the hotels. Mainly Southend at first then Oldham outnumbered us. We stayed until well gone 8pm and both sets of fans were a credit to their club. Oldham never took the **** and non of us whinged. We were totally honest when we wished you lads well and were glad it was you and not someone like FGR.

Wembley stadium, The NL and all the politicians involved tried to take the p*** out of all of us. Im proud to say between us we rose above all of them.

Good luck to Oldham in L2. Im already looking forward to another day out a Wembley next May:Winking:

Not knocking Hayes but did anyone notice that for all 6 pens taken against him in the play off games he dives to his right!
I’m no goalkeeper coach but I might be suggesting he mix it up a bit!
Yeah I mentioned it a few times, after FGR and then after wembley as well. We either aren't doing our homework on opposition penalty takers (which might have been difficult for FGR), or the homework is saying they all go that direction, or he can only dive to his right - although I'm sure I've seen him save shots to his left. Or something else??

If you look at goals Hayes concedes, he really does seem to have a weakness low down to his left. Granted he made a good save to his left in the game . He does his best but Collin in my view is quite some way in front of him. Just hope Collin gets over these injuries in time for the start of next season.

I don't understand why GW didn't come on, push Gus up front and he could have been backwards and forwards with fresh legs.
I'm now worried, if Gus stays with us that GW will put in a transfer request....I definitely would now not being used and not even given 10 minutes at Wembley. Bit of man management.
Unless the deal has already been done for Gus?
I too was surprised gw didnt come on. Gus was so spent he didnt even have the strength to put a cross in... plus it would have given him a chance to play at wembley which not everyone gets to do.

No. The East stand has to take priority. For safety and financial reasons.......Once a year day trippers wouldn't understand that. A group of decent business men clearly do.

No point in them explaining it further. As they would just be wasting their time. Either support and put up....Or shut the f*ck up.
Thought you might put your oar in @Belfast.FYI Unlike you I was born and grew up in SOS going to a local primary shool and local secondary schools, that hardly makes me a once a year tripper.FWIW,listening to TL again I formed the distinct impression that he thought a complete remodelling of the East Stand would be necessary in order to cut SUFC's 2 million quid operating loss. While I'm not a Biznessman (FWIW ) I have met one of the people concerned. He happens to go to every away game that's where he meets up with my good mate mfurokAnd also in the DB from what I understand.FWIW I've always thought social media sites (like SZ) are a good place to express an opinion or rebut one.Not to develop an argument. You would rather appear to prove my point. :Winking:
