SUFC: The Future Next season

View attachment 37352

This shows our 2 main problems that need fixing for next season.

Not enough goals scored, apart from Gus & Bim, 3 or 5 each from our strikers is noway near enough
So few pens awarded and scored. 4 across the whole season??
OG also underperformed too :Winking:

Obvious we need more efficient strikers but not sure what we can do about getting more pens awarded?
Better players that are capable of direct ball carrying runs into the box with a bit of trickery. That's how we will win pens. We don't see enough of that. We send too many crap crosses into the box, rather than look to take a man on instead.

Leon being exactly the sort of player to achieve that if we can get him in that position with enough frequency.

Bit Harsh on Kendall and Bonne that were only here half a season. If your 2nd forward got 10-11 a season you wouldn't be complaining too much. Trouble is we don't have that first forward!

Our problem was that we conceded eight goals in three games in the playoffs.

Bonne arrived in September although his first half was certainly forgettable.
Do we think we now have the following vying for positions in mid 3? As follows:

Morton/Husin at the base
KAF / Miley for shutting up shop/energy in middle
Leon/ Coker - Advanced playmaker
I’d say the roles go more

Morton/Husin/Miley
KAF/Coker/Husin
Leon

Fully understand that there are budget constraints, but based on the Chairman's recent comments I'm hoping for more squad changes than previously expected. Incredibly proud of what the current squad achieved in some difficult circumstances, but the reality is that we just squeezed into the playoffs on 69 points.

If we really are going to go for it next season, as Justin says we are, then we need a squad that can add 25 - 30 points to our tally from last season. That will surely mean moving on some players currently under contract, and I think also having a larger squad than we've recently had.

Barnet lost in the playoffs in 2024 after finishing second with 86 points, they then made 12 new signings by the end of June. That was a real show of intent that transformed them into a title winning team. I'm not expecting us to compete with that but would be good to see some early signings in key positions where we need to improve.

I'd agree with this. I've seen posts suggesting we don't change midfield drastically, Leon should be the main man etc - or that we just need 1 striker. We need a substantial injection of quality into this squad. Look these players have heart, they did wonders getting to Wembley, but it's way off a title challenging squad so you're right .. if Justin is saying we are going for top spot I'd expect some very decisive moves in the transfer market over the coming weeks. We cannot afford to be second or third in the queue for players and I don't mean big money players - players who fit the mould - hungry players who can hit the ground running and take us up a notch. This is where COSU, the scouting team and the football department really need to move as one.

What exactly did he say because I get through impression he's been misquoted. COSU have said all along we need to operate in a financially sustaining way. By saying "we're going for it", I believe he feels we have a genuine chance of competing. It doesn't mean we're going to throw endless money around like FGR. They "went for it", but that model is not gaurenteed to work. Fans should not start calling on COSUs heads because we haven't won the league. They set a 5 year project I recall .....

Nobody sensible is suggesting he chucks money at it but I see nothing wrong with ambition or fighting talk. Why not go into the season with the desire to be the best. Maybe that's more an American/Aussie thing than a British thing.

Some quotes from the BBC.

As I said earlier if he is really targeting top 1 finish then he needs to give Kev and Co the tools to do it, otherwise it's really not fair on the mgmt team.

Think Husin doesn’t play the in between role well. Better at the base for me.

I agree that he’s better at the base these days. I think he can also act as cover for KAF and Coker in the 8 role though.

My concern is that a midfield of Husin at the base and Coker and KAF ahead of him is going to concede a fair few goals.

Perhaps it will leave us open, but you have horses for courses. Cav for the tougher games or Morts come in. Husin in when he’s in form and can dominate potentially less dangerous opposition. Think we have a good mix there as long as Cav has good pre season and is back to near his best. If not we need a new enforcer.

Don't think he's been misquoted, he suggested we should be 'chasing top honours' next season. I reckon he knows enough about the game to realise that the current squad, with a few minor tweaks, won't be able to do that. That's led me to think that there may be more changes on the way than I previously thought. I certainly won't be calling for COSU heads if that doesn't happen though.
