But did you see Auckland thrashed 10-0 by The Germans?

When will this madness ever stop? When the Americans get a 12 division fully franchised no relegation Premier League?

Fans have got to start voting with their wallets. I know this was free to air but stop feeding the Sky, BT etc of this world. Starved of subscriptions advertising revenue will fall as well. Much as we have been through it in recent years I’ll have no sympathy if any of the big boys eventually fail.

Not sure how well the crowds are for this. I've seen screenshots of the tickets for sale in the stadium which have only been sold so that tv viewers get the impression its a full house.

Pep comes out and in the press with comments such as “This is a very, very serious competition,” and “A big number of the top teams in the world will be competing in this tournament and I can assure you, we’re going to give it our best shot. We’re going there to win it.”

But ask him to play in the Carabao Cup and its comments such as “The next round, I announce to you now, I play the second team,” and “We are not going to waste energy on this competition, for sure.”

It won't fail as its got middle eastern money behind it.

It is no secret that the Club World Cup would not be happening in the way it is now happening without Dazn. In December 2024 Dazn offered Fifa $1bn for the broadcast rights which went almost uncontested.

A month later Saudi Arabia concluded its own deal to buy a 10% stake in Dazn in return for another $1bn.

The brown envelope business in Zurich must be booming.

I get all that with Saudi and US money but there will come a tipping point and when that comes it will be US style franchising. When will that happen. God knows but with every new or expanded competition the day gets nearer. Ask a proper football fan whether they prefer this competition or FA Cup replays. For that matter the English FA shot themselves in the foot the day FA Cup semis were moved to Wembley.

It's easy to see why when you look at the prize money. The winner of the Carabao Cup gets a measly £100k as prize money for winning it, meanwhile you get win £1.5m just for winning a group match in the club world cup, even a draw nets you £800k. Money talks unfortunately.

Absolutely money talks. I just don't like managers hiding behind poor excuses such as player burn out and fixture congestion suggestion some of these competitions are the cause when its.

They come out and claim they want changes to protect their players, but then sign them up to end of season tours just for money.

It’s Saudi money not US money.

It’s an attempt by FIFA, backed by Saudi Arabia in return for them being given the World Cup to host, to reduce UEFA’s power by positioning it as a rival to the Champions (sic) League.

Yes but being hosted in the US. Either way it doesn’t matter where the money is coming from. Football continues in a path that its current average fan isn’t remotely interested in.

I think this should have the answers but I haven't looked at in enough detail to see if it explains the arbitrariness of Inter Miami's selection.

Officially it's because the US is hosting and so they got an extra place for whichever team won the most points in the league that season. FIFA didn't decide that was the rule until Inter Miami had already finished top, no doubt if they hadn't come top then FIFA would have decided there was some other criteria that conveniently got Messi to the CWC instead.

I couldn't disagree more. Football is very much fourth or fifth choice for most Americans in terms of team sports, but it is very popular, particularly among hispanics. The tickets are not overly expensive and there is genuine enthusiasm to see top teams from Europe and South America playing against American and Mexican sides. I'm going to see Inter vs River Plate next week at the Seahawks' stadium which is an incredible venue, and I expect it will be full.

Personally I feel sorry for the players having to play in 30 Degrees ,heat (acordng to my copy of El Periodico this am.Unlikely that any of the big clubs concerned will fail as they'yre all being rewarded handsomely for being there from what i understand.

Putting aside the other points, I've actually enjoyed the games I've seen so far and it's thrown up some interesting games - like Boca Juniors v Benfica, who met for the first ever time last night. I love seeing all the different footballing cultures and it's better than no games to watch at all.

Bucket list stadium for me, that one. Always think it looks incredible when my NFL team (rarely) play there
