Podcast / Fanzine Talking Shrimpers Podcast - COMING SOON!

Our next Co-host reveal is Charlie Mullard.

Charlie has been a passionate Southend United supporter for over 30 years, following the Blues home and away through the highs and lows. For him, matchday is more than just 90 minutes of football – it’s a release, a chance to escape the pressures of everyday life and immerse himself in the club he loves (even if they cause him the occasional stress!).

Away from the terraces, Charlie works in the prison service as a dog handler – a demanding and often intense role. Football, especially Southend United, provides that vital balance and sense of community.

You may recognise Charlie’s voice from BBC Essex’s Football Fans Phone-In, where he’s become a familiar name offering sharp, honest takes on Southend’s performances, often alongside former Blues player Glenn Pennyfather.

When he’s not supporting Southend, Charlie stays active playing five-a-side football and has already conquered the London Marathon twice – with hopes high for a third in the near future.

Now joining the Talking Shrimpers team as co-host, Charlie brings his grounded perspective, years of loyal support, and a no-nonsense, balanced view on all things Southend United. Expect insight, passion, and plenty of honest debate throughout the season.

Was good listen with Bernie but when it went to Steve who doesn’t support Southend it felt a bit off IMO. As others have said, it’s a grind too.
Glad you enjoyed it, as it was a completely new medium for me. Unfortunately, work commitments got in the way on my part, but I really enjoyed doing it and was particularly proud of my last Shrimperscast input… the hour-long sit down interview at Roots Hall with Justin and Tom. Having spent many years dealing with Ron, it was so refreshing to speak to two custodians of our club who were so open and honest. It was also great to see them quickly take action on the subjects I raised; improving the dire catering facilities at the Hall and giving us the North Bank back. The chief exec put out a press release the next day clarifying the points I brought up, which was a massive compliment. And Justin and Tom even put their necks on the line and said we could get promotion through the play-offs, when I told them we had no chance of winning the league. Fair play to them, they almost pulled it off against all the odds. It’s amazing to see so many other podcasts branching out of Blues, and good luck going forward to the people producing them. It is so important that our club has a multitude of independent voices, as we already know only too well! P.S. I’m always available for selection 😉

Before forming our podcast, I listened to every other Southend related podcast for research purposes, as to provide something different. I have to say though, a huge admirer of your work. Shrimpercast was an excellent listen, brilliant hosts and interviews, and if we're half as succesful in delivery, I'll be very happy. Great job!

That last interview was great. As an ex-journo myself I enjoyed the style and you got them opening up. Would have loved to hear you grill Ron, would have been box office. COSU have been great and we have our club back. Onwards!

The funny thing was they weren’t happy with it at first. I got accused of ‘grilling’ them. But as I explained to them, how could I turn the thumbscrews when all they had done was good deeds? That was me playing nice 😂 I told them they should have been pleased by how it panned out, as our fans had been lied to for a quarter of a century and their honesty would be applauded… which it was! I’m happy to say they realised it in the end.
