A reason why England have underperformed?

Listening on 5-Live as I was driving today, I heard Chris Waddle give an interesting reason why we have been dire in this World Cup.

Basically under Bobby Robson, the players were allowed some freedoms - to have a beer or three after a game, to socialise with each other, and most of all players roomed together.

Apparently under Capello, the players are pretty much locked in their hotel rooms for up to 5 hours a day with no communication to the outside world bar a mobile or a laptop, and as a result of this, a terminally bored and homesick.

Could explain the reason why virtually the whole squad are out of sorts?

That could explain it. Imagine being thousands of miles away from home and having to entertain yourself for hours on end per day.

aww diddums, they can play golf and millions of other leisure things while they rest... what a hardship.

This'll be the same Chris Waddle that was part of the England team that made such a God awful start to Italia 90, which eventually reached the semi finals culminating with Waddle hoofing the ball half way down Turin High Street.

I've highlighted the salient points of your post there H.

But have little contact with home and the real world? You can be in the most luxurious place in the world but if you feel lonely and are missing your home and loved ones, then you might as well be in prison. End result is the same.

Under Sven, things were far too lax, but this sounds far too harsh a regime to me. You need some bonding time, and you need some down time. If they're stressed because of "restrictions" then it's no wonder they've been playing so poorly.

English manager next time please, someone who understands the English pysche.

Indeed, and there's no difference in the displays of 1990 & 2010 thus far, and as far as I am aware we are still in the competition. And FWIW there's been the same complete over reaction by both press and supporters as in 1990. We will beat Slovenia on Wednesday, how far we progress in the knock out stages remains to be seen.

You mean play match, get ****ed and then spit roast some doris with the left back.

If Capello drops that donkey Heskey and plays Gerrard in his right position, im sure you will see a much happier team. The players want Joe Cole, they dont want Heskey.

What he said, typical over-reaction to a bad performance.

As long as it's not Fulham's Uncle Roy.We've already given England one manager in recent years.:)

The England manager can't win. Sven was criticised for being too relaxed and for making the base like a holiday camp and then there was all the furore over the WAGS. Capello tightens discipline and he gets criticised for being too harsh. Most of these players have played abroad either for England or for their clubs many times before, I doubt that homesickness is a major issue. The days of players having a few drinks/fags in between games that Waddle is talking about are gone.

The voice of reason as usual.

Complete over reaction and its worth noting that the only team we beat in normal time in 1990 was Egypt and we still could have won the thing. I sometimes think that these other nations are expected to roll over and die, where is the credit for Algeria's defending.

Also amazing how when Fabio first took over, his regime was disciplined and just what players needed, taking players out of the comfort zone and keeping them on their toes. Now we aren't winning, its too tough, players need to relax more, know that they are playing etc. They shall be calling for the WAGS to come out next.

I still fully expect us to reach the semis at the very least. Still a bit tense though.

absolutely, correct me if I'm wrong but his competitive record is 9-2-1*, which in my opinion is fantastic.

If the players are bored, why not spend a bit of time hanging out with your team-mates, rather than moping around in your hotel room or just hanging out with your club-mates. Rooney's dip in form is a worry, however it'll be typical that he'll come out firing on Wednesday and all will be forgotten/forgiven.

*loss being the dead rubber against Ukraine

IIRC in Fabio's first competitive qualifying game, we went in 0-0 at half-time against Andorra!

We have rarely had a good first half with Capello in charge and we usually step up a gear or two in the second half, but we can not afford to do this against the top teams.

You have indeed recalled correctly. IIRC the introduction of Joe Cole at half-time (for Downing) precipitated an upturn in fortunes. I certainly hope he plays on Wednesday.

So, we'll do the same as 1990. Which means we'll scrape through against Slovenia, take a last minute goal to scrape through in the 2nd round, get a couple of dubious penalties to scrape through the Quarter Final and lose to the first decent team we play on penalties.

Don't get me wrong, I'd take that at the moment but Italia 90 wasn't a triumph by any means.
