A vintage programme and Ekco

BALDY

Striker
I have an Ekco valve radio (in my small collection of vintage radios).
Does/did anybody else buy an item from Ekco?

My father worked for Ekco, originally in their Malmesbury, Wiltshire plant. He was transferred to Southend in 1960 when they closed it. Our first television set was of course an Ekco, as was my first record player etc. In the early 70s when Access took over many of the buildings on the site my bank transferred me to their newly formed credit card department there and I was a regular customer at the Ekco shop on site and also a regular at the Ekco clubhouse.

Thank you for all of the imformation.
What did you buy in their shop?
It is amazing when you look back and how tiny the T V screens were.
This is for sale https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30312336...8BLZvWo33a5fbppKjZMQ3J3V/u|tkp:Bk9SR8jyrpH6YQ

My father also worked at the Ekco in the 60's- early 70's at their Priory Crescent site. Whilst we also had various electrical items Ekco branded, we had quite a range of their plastics goods too. This along with very early recollections of the works Christmas do's for the families - great memories.... Not living in the area for decades now, I had heard there's some kind of exhibition on in the town somewhere.

I used to work there till it closed
I made my first tv when we got married unfortunately didn’t keep any thing
used to see the blues train sometimes out of the top floor windows

Thanks a lot.

This is truly amazing.

Visitors will also find out about the largely unknown role that workers from EKCO played during World War Two. In addition to making significant contributions towards the development of radar, EKCO had a role in developing components of the famous Enigma code-breaking machine.

Some of the Ekco radios make good money these days, there are plenty of collectors. Went to a (Stacey’s) auction at The Freight House about 10-12 years ago and a chap’s collection of over 30 radios were sold. Prices in the hundreds for several of them.

Of course they have to be in very good condition and both of my Ekcos's are.
