Acceptance of a new era

Bigdel

Coach
On the way to the ground,I spoke to numerous Bristol Rovers supporters, who are understandable pleased how the season is going, not one of them believed that Ian Atkins would turn the team around, after clearing out a majority of players, and almost starting from square one.
The ground was small, but packed out with 9000 fans being heard, even when we scored the crowd didn't boo cat call ,abuse players, but accepted a team scored against them and the only way to encourage the team is by cheering them on.
It had me thinking why cann't a majority of fans accept Tilly is starting a new era,and it may take another season to gell,I am still excited by the players,at the moment to many are feezing with their final pass,or afraid to shot, but the players are there, its just acase of when.
The season is still very new and being 12 points off top is nothing a strong run will achieve, and yes we will have a strong run.I am not looking through rose tinted glasses, just accepting the season how it comes, and perhaps if we can become like the Bristol fans and get behind the team,a play off spot will be within our grasp.

Have to say thought every thing at the ground, stewards, food, supporters, toilets were 10 /10,its something the club could learn from.

I think that the Blues crowd generally have been pretty supportive of Tilly so far and this would not have been the case if he'd not been a popular ex player. However if he continues to play Drewe who is the biggest donkey I've ever seen (great guy, fantastic attitude and work rate but he just aint'a footballer) not only will the crowd get on his back but we will go down.

To be honest who else can he play,Dudfield,Gray and Bramble are to similar in style,at least with Drewe he can occassionally hold the ball or flick on with the head.
We willnot go out and buy again, which means we are left with loan layers,I would prefer to stick with what we have, and either change to new tactics or work harder on the system we have.

I think another few games and we will be forgetting our woes and looking towards the middle of the table! [rose tinted spec's?, yes maybe!]. I think the team and management are optimistic and we need to be too...

Well I can never see a day personally when I will turn on Stevie Tilson

I do agree thst Drewe needs to be dropped and for good. The bloke is a donkey of the highest calibre. Missed a sitter at West Ham and another last night from what I hear....

Tes and Lawrie is fine for me as at least I would have confidnce in both to hit double figs this season. Drewe could play for 10 years and I would back him to score more than 10 goals.

There's Drewe bashing going on already I see.

The thing is, if Tes was to come in, which to be fair, I hope he does, he'll end up getting slaughtered by 'fans' straight away as well. Whoever plays, just won't be good enough it seems for some people.

I seem to remember Dave Webb offering all the detractors to come and join in with the training a few years back; does anyone recall anybody taking up the offer?

Yes, I remember that... he [Webby] was prompted to call our bluff because an SUFC fan approached him after the game against Brentford [LDV Southern Area Final Away Leg 2001] and claimed that he could play better than the players Webby picked for the game!!!

I remember Webb being quite enraged and laid down the gauntlet to any fan to join in a training session with the Blues and prove that he is better than any player in the team... I don't believe there were any takers?

Well justified if you ask me! If you think you can "talk the talk!" you've got to be prepared to "walk the walk!"

I mentioned Barry Fry in another thread today, but despite his unorthadox nature, he is the only other manager besides Dave Webb who has ever come close enough to having the right "man-management" skills to run a team like Southend... however, I would not have either of them back in favour of Tilson/Brush at the moment [even if they were available!]. I think they should stay, come what may at the end of the season, in order to retain some consistency... could we be congratulating them come May 2005? who knows...
