I guess that would definitely change your mind if you're on the Southend Victoria line. C2C and South Western are all fine. A fellow Shrimper who travels from Rayleigh and normally goes on the Southend Victoria line, is getting a Greater Anglia service in the morning (they are still running every hour) and C2C back. Then just bus back to Rayleigh.
