Not to make light of the fiasco of yesterday, history tends to repeat itself, the game at Aldershot is certainly proof of this as the following from the 1949-50 season proves:

Div.3 (South) Saturday 19th November 1949 Aldershot v Southend United Abandoned.
This match is best forgotten, it was started by the referee when visability was poor and it was impossible to see across the field let alone the goalposts, and United were leading 1-0 when it was abandoned. At half time with a 2.45 kick off the referee refused appeals from both sides to forego the interval and carry on immediately. Then when the match was abandoned seven minutes from time, conditions had not noticebly deteriorated and it was felt that the game could have continued. Wakefield had scored the goal after twelve minutes when he received a pass from McAlinden and made no mistake with a geat shot.

It seemed United are destined not to play their away fixture with Aldershot this season. The original date was for November 19th when the ground was shrouded in fog at the start. The replay was to have been on Wednesday 26th March 1950 but this time the fixture was snowed out. On Wednesday morning there were over six inches of snow on the pitch. The third attempt to play off this fixture will be on Tuesday at Aldershot kick off 6.30 p.m. Next week Blues will be engaged in practically a game a night. On Monday they travel to Folkestone, Manager Harry Warren’s former happy hunting game to play a benefit game. On Tuesday the League side will be playing at Aldershot. On Wednesday we have the Hankey benefit game against West Ham and the final of the Combination cup against Swansea the following day. On Friday the players will be off to draw their pay and on Saturday the team will turn out at Leyton Orient.

No.41 Div 3 (South) Tuesday 2nd May 1950 Aldershot 1-1 Southend United.
As anticipated it was a hard game at Aldershot and the Blues forwards had an off day. Once again it was the United defence who saved the day being under pressure virtually from the kick off but proved themselves worthy of the situation. No goals were scored in the first half, but eight minutes after the interval Aldershot went ahead, and after this reverse changes were made, “Choppy” Wallbanks taking over the leadership from Cyril Grant, Lawler dropped into the half-back line and Davies and Grant were the inside forwards. After a spell of hard pressure Tippett got through and netted for the Blues. Team: Nash; Lindsay and Walton; Wallbanks, Sheard and French; Jones, Davies, Grant, Lawler and Tippett.

If it’s any consolation this season Blues finished third which I think most of us would be happy to be repeated this season.
