Tonight's referee will be Andy Woolmer from Northampton. He is a very short referee with even shorter hair and, as shorter officials sometimes do, he has the capacity to be slightly officious. He is in his 8th year as a League referee and has refereed Southend on many occasions. The most recent was Wycombe at home last year when he wasn't too bad. Prior to that it was last season when we lost 0-2 to Crewe. He wasn't great; nor were we.

His first visit to Roots Hall however is somewhat more memorable as it was the Boston match when he sent off Darryl and heralded the appearance of Tes the Cat (...... his name is Tes the Cat, he plays for Montserrat).

His cards this season are pretty much average.

Assisting will be Stuart Butler from Kent and first year lino Daniel Robathan from Dorking. Fourth official is Matthew Buonassisi who I believe used to be known as Matthew McLaughlin from Bedford.

à propos of nothing really but "Bedford is home to one of the largest concentrations of Italian immigrants in the UK. According to a 2001 census, 2 in 7 (almost 30%) of Bedford's population are of at least partial Italian descent. This is mainly as a result of labour recruitment in the early 1950s by the London Brick Company in the southern Italian regions of Puglia, Campania, Calabria, Molise, Abruzzo and Sicily."
