Our last five visits to Valley Parade have seen us shown a total of 4 red cards (and 1 to them). Despite this we've managed two wins and two draws in those five games.

Tuesday's referee is the youngest referee on the Football League List, in his first season. The 29 year old Ross Joyce from Elston, just outside Middlesbrough, has progressed from the Teeside youth leagues remarkably quickly.

He has not refereed either Southend or Bradford before and this will be his 20th match as a Football League referee, his previous 19 producing an only slightly high 63 yellows and 3 reds. Nearly all his matches were in League Two up to November; since then they've been mainly League One so he's probably doing okay.

By profession, he is the Referees Development Officer for the North Riding FA. The number of League Officials who actually work for the various county FAs seems to have increased dramatically in recent years. Favourable treatment from assessors ? Possibly.

At the end of last season he refereed the Conference Play Off final at Wembley in front of a crowd of over 47,000.

Assisting will be Graeme Fyvie and Danny Markham, both from Sunderland and Ricky Wootton will be making the shortish journey from Wakefield to carry out Fourth Official duties.

Just for once, can the officials gave a good game. Lets be talking about the football and not them after the game. Been pretty disappointed with the standard this season.

Well it ain't flipping midlands is it?! Still north east:'(

North east of Manchester I suppose.

For us to moan about a Teesside ref doing a Bradford game would be akin to Bradford whinging if the reverse fixture was officiated by someone from Oxfordshire.

Mick,

Is this part of a Football League strategy to promote younger referees? I think it would be positive if there is such a strategy in place.

...... as indeed it was in 2011 ! I recall no such complaints.
