Man in charge tonight is 30-year old, Geoff Eltringham from Sunderland. He is in his second season as a League referee and will be refereeing his second Southend match. The previous one was our 2-1 away defeat at Carlisle towards the beginning of last season when he cautioned Macca, Grant and Barnard.
This will be his second visit to Crewe this season. On his first (a draw against Oxford) he dismissed Constable eventually, but received some criticism for not doing so earlier.
He is an ex-Sunderland season ticket holder, chairman of the Sunderland Referees' Association and works in the timber trade and (look away now, museshrimper) he is one of the shorter officials.
His yellow card count is just below average but, worryingly as we can't afford suspensions, his red card count is sky high with a red card in 12 of his 24 matches !!
Assisting will be Alan Parker and Nigel Smith both from Derby with Steve Copeland from Wallasey (not Wallasea!) as 4th official.
