Andy Hessenthaler talks to Kent Online before the game with Southend United

Dover Athletic manager Andy Hessenthaler previews FA Cup tie with Sol Campbell's Southend United

Dover boss Andy Hessenthaler does not believe there are any favourites in Sunday’s televised FA Cup tie against Sol Campbell’s struggling Southend team.

The Shrimpers are one off the bottom of League 1 with just one win from 17 matches, 14 of which have been defeats.

They appointed former Spurs and England defender Campbell as their new manager last month, and his backroom team at Roots Hall includes former Manchester United and England striker Andy Cole and Icelandic defender Hermann Hreidarsson, whose playing career took in Charlton and Ipswich.

Many feel the strugglers – beaten 7-1 last month by Doncaster on a night Dover had them watched – are ripe for the taking but Hessenthaler countered:“I don’t see that, they are two divisions above us.

“Yes, there’s chance of an upset, that’s why the cameras are there, but they’re League 1 and we’re National League.

“We’ve got a chance, of course we have, but we need to have everyone at their max and hope that they are maybe a little bit off it.

“Looking at their league position it seems like they are finding it a bit difficult at the moment, but Sol will hope he can go in there and turn things around.

“It’s similar to the position we had before we came in here last season (when Dover were bottom with just seven points from 15 games) so he’ll be hoping they can get on a run.”

Hessenthaler, who watched Southend lose 4-1 at Portsmouth on Tuesday night, admitted he is ‘really excited’ about the first round tie and hopes the Crabble faithful turn out in numbers.

He said “The league is our bread and butter but I still think the FA Cup is the best cup competition around.

“I was lucky enough as a player to have some good runs. I had a few runs which didn’t go so well, but mainly I have good memories.

“It’s a competition that brings the crowds out and hopefully that will be the case on Sunday.

“The players are really looking forward to it and I’m just as excited.”

Hessenthaler had no less than seven players out injured for Saturday’s goalless National League draw at AFC Fylde and he does not expect the situation to improve greatly.

Ricky Modeste and Nassim L’Ghoul could play a part against Southend but defensive duo Kevin Lokko and Will De Havilland are almost certainly out due to their ankle injuries.

Joe Bedford, Bobby-Joe Taylor and Bilel Hinchiri are the other players with niggles.

Midfielder Jai Reason misses the tie through suspension after picking up his fifth booking at Fylde but new loan signing Ruel Sotiriou has been cleared to play by his parent club Leyton Orient.

The 19-year-old Cypriot forward was on the bench for the trip to Fylde but did not get on.

Hessenthaler explained: “I could not get him on because of the way the game was going.

“We looked so comfortable that I was loathe to change it, but he may well play on Sunday.

“As for Jai, he was devastated after Saturday. He’s been excellent for us recently. Let’s hope we can win on Sunday so that he gets the chance to play in the second round.”

Sol Campbell talks to Southend United OS before travelling down to Dover

Campbell: “We have to earn the right to play.”
Sol Campbell OS.jpg
Blues boss on this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Dover

Sol Campbell is looking forward to his first taste of the Emirates FA Cup First Round this weekend but is fully aware of what to expect.

Campbell is a four-time winner of the competition in his playing days, three at Arsenal and once with Portsmouth.

And ahead of Sunday’s live TV game against National League side Dover Athletic, the Blues boss made it clear how he wants his team to approach it.

"We've got to be ready but we have to earn the right to play,” he said.

"I don't care where Dover is [in the league pyramid], you've got to earn the right.

"The first rule of any football game is earn the right to play. Earn the right.

"My job is to make sure that the players know it's not a normal game. It's not a normal game.

"People try to do heroics, people try all different types of things to see if they can get into the hat and at the end of the day it's all about getting into the hat.

"It’s a warm distraction for us and it’s probably come at the right time. Hopefully the magic of the Cup brings something out of us.”

Following three league defeats in his first three games as manager against difficult opposition, Blues travel to Kent looking to get the new manager his first win.

The way to get that?

"Play our football and take our chances,” Campbell said. "But the main thing is earn your right.

"Nobody is going to give you anything, there's no divine right to win a game and the FA Cup you've got to really realise that because we've seen over the decades how many cup upsets from all sorts of levels. So we've got to be ready.

"If we can just stop our little mistakes here and there, we're good."

Blues welcome Ethan Hamilton and Stephen McLaughlin back from suspension with Sam Mantom the closest to return from injury.

But Sunday will come too soon for the midfielder.

"He's just started [doing work]. For us it's not about rushing people back. It's getting people back at the right time.

"If he progresses, kicks on and surprises us that's what it's all about. We're in a position that we can't afford to rush people back.

"If you come back early and then break down again, you say to yourself why didn't we give them another two weeks or 10 days.

"We'll welcome him back when he comes back.”

Sol Campbell talks to Chris Phillips of the ECHO ahead of the game with Dover Athletic

Sol Campbell won’t change approach for Southend United's FA Cup clash at Dover Athletic

Sol Campbell Echo.jpg
Not changing his approach - Southend United manager Sol Campbell

Southend United manager Sol Campbell insists the Shrimpers will not change their approach for Sunday’s FA Cup first round clash at Dover Athletic.

Blues have lined up with a five man defence in Campbell’s first three games in charge against tough trio Ipswich Town, Sunderland and Portsmouth.

But Campbell will be keeping things the same against Dover, despite the Shrimpers being favourites for the first time with the former England international in charge.

“It will be the same,” said Campbell.

“You have to have a good attitude and you have to play like they’re equal to us.

“The second you think you’re better than someone before you kick a ball is when problems start.

“You can’t do that and I’ll be getting that message across to the players.”

The Shrimpers have on loan midfielder Ethan Hamilton and winger Stephen McLaughlin available this weekend after the duo both completed three match suspensions for red cards they were shown during the 7-1 defeat to Doncaster Rovers last month.

Midfielder Luke Hyam faces a late check on a hamstring problem which forced him out of Tuesday night’s 4-1 defeat at Portsmouth but midfielder Sam Mantom (hamstring), striker Charlie Kelman (ankle) and defender John White (broken arm) are expected to miss out.

Defender Liam Ridgewell is also unlikely to be called upon as he continues to work his way back to full fitness following a calf injury.

Big Match Preview

Dover Athletic vs Southend United

Big Preview.jpg
Overview

Southend United travel to the Crabble Athletic Ground to take on National League side Dover Athletic in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup this Sunday, live on BT Sport (12pm KO).

Manager Sol Campbell won the FA Cup four times as a player with Arsenal and Portsmouth and he’ll be hoping that those happy memories can drive him onto a first win as Southend boss.

But in former Gillingham boss, Andy Hessenthaler, Dover have an experienced manager who will know more than a thing or two about Sunday’s visitors as his side aim to cause a cup upset.

Form

Blues’ winless run continued in midweek thanks to a 4-1 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park with Southend now without a win in nine matches in all competitions.

New boss Sol Campbell has had a baptism of fire facing Ipswich, Sunderland and Pompey in his first three games as Blues manager, with Southend having picked up just two wins all season.

Dover currently sit 12th in the National League and come into the weekend off the back of a 3-1 win over Eastleigh at home before a goalless draw in midweek away at AFC Fylde.

Last Meeting

Saturday 13th December 1975

Southend United 4-1 Dover Athletic

Southend and Dover have met just the once before, during the 1975/76 season where the two sides met in the FA Cup Second Round at Roots Hall, with Blues running out comfortable 4-1 winners.

Having beaten Swansea in Round One, Southend surpassed Dover before beating Brighton and Cardiff to make the fifth round where they eventually fell to Derby County.

Blues Team News

Blues welcome back two midfielders into the fold with on-loan Manchester United man Ethan Hamilton and Irishman Stephen McLaughlin back available again after suspension.

One midfielder not available though is Sam Mantom who remains on the sidelines with the 27-year-old expected to be out for another couple of weeks with a hamstring problem.

Mantom is joined by Stephen Humphrys, Charlie Kelman and John White on the injury list along with long-term absentees Sam Barratt and Harry Kyprianou.

Dover Dangerman

Inih Effiong will certainly be Dover’s dangerman on Sunday with the 28-year-old up there as one of the top goal scorers in the whole of the National League.

Effiong has scored nine times for The Whites already this campaign, which is the same amount of goals he scored for Dover in the league during the whole of last season.

The 6ft 3in striker scored seven goals in a nine-game spell earlier in the year and recently ended a six-game goal drought with a brace in Dover’s 3-1 win over Eastleigh.

Ref Watch

David Rock will be in charge at the Crabble Athletic Ground on Sunday, being assisted by Leigh Crowhurst and Mike Desborough with Dean Whitestone standing in as the fourth official.

Rock has officiated 10 matches so far this season, brandishing 23 yellow cards and one red, with his last outing the 1-1 draw between Leyton Orient and Carlisle United in League Two.

It’ll be the first time that Rock has refereed a game involving Blues, though he’s more familiar with Dover having taken charge of Dover 18 times in his career, including three matches last season.

Away Fans Guide

The Crabble Athletic Ground is found in a picturesque setting, situated into a hillside on one side of a river valley with the ground surrounded by trees which overlook the pitch.

Behind each goal is a terrace, with the main stand – which has a second tier for directors and corporate guests – opposite the newly built family stand which was introduced in 2016.

Blues fans heading to the south-east of Kent will mostly find themselves in the Dover End Terrace which can hold up to 2,000 fans with the Crabble as a whole having a capacity of 5,745.

Tickets

Sunday’s match at Dover will be all-ticket with no pay-on-the-day option available, with Southend being given an allocation of 2,000 tickets – 112 of which are seated.

Tickets are on general sale until 3pm today (Friday 8th November) and all tickets must be collected in person from the Blues Box Office as there will be no option to collect on matchday.

You must collect your tickets from the Blues Box Office before by close of play on Friday 8 November unless arrangements are made with the Box Office to pick up on Saturday between 10am and 3pm.
