Drone flyers

A quick request from a pilot (albeit of only ****** little planes): Please fly your drones safely, and away from airports and aeroplanes. Some people are flying them too close deliberately and it is only a matter of time before one brings down a plane by distracting the pilot.

Surely they are a terrorists dream. No need to be a suicide bomber, just strap on a pound of explosive and away you go.

Never really understood why commercial airlines are worried about drones - they're tiny and flimsy. An aeroplane is large, has huge engines and is not flimsy. Surely it's like a fly meeting a fly swatter?

The only crash that involved Concorde happened when on take off the plane struck a small piece of metal that had fallen onto the runway from another plane. I'm sure you have seen the video

Problem is the airliner is doing 250mph during descent .

Apart from anything, it's a distraction to the pilot. During ascent I would say it's less of an issue because the plane (for noise abatement purposes) climbs at quite a steep angle and will be out of range relatively quickly. During the landing the plane comes in at usually a 3 degree glide, which means it's in range of a drone for a long time. Landing is also when the pilot's workload is at his or her greatest and any distraction is extremely unwelcome. Even at small aerodromes like Elstree the people in the tower won't talk to you whilst you're on finals because it is too distracting.

Also, think how much damage a bird strike can do, and you realise that they are a very real danger to any aeroplane.

Used responsibly there's nothing wrong with drones, but use near airports is a growing issue.

That's why they only let you play with trains.

Near miss at 11,000 feet. I didn't realise drones flew so high.

BBC

It won't take much to distract a pilot, especially when they're not expecting to see anything, and at the speeds they're flying they haven't got time to work out what it is. Moreover, one of those could so easily smash a cockpit window, or get sucked into an engine.
