Our League record against Yeovil couldn’t be more even with seven wins apiece and a couple of draws. That record was enhanced by us beating them twice last season. We won the match at Roots Hall when Jake Hyde interrupted his spells of injury to score the only goal. Yeovil played the majority of the match with 10 men. Then more recently, in a televised away match 6 months ago, again Jake Hyde scored and we even managed to get Rhys Murphy onto the pitch and scoring. Yeovil played the latter part of the match with 10 men.

However, this is, of course, not a League match. We go to Yeovil in the FA Cup for the fourth time. The previous three matches all finished 1-0 to Yeovil but hopefully they will be slightly less formidable opposition as a Step 6 side.

Saturday’s match is due to be refereed by James Durkin, son of Paul Durkin who stepped down from Premier League duties to referee that re-arranged end of season 2000/01 match against Mansfield after the tragic death of Mike North, a friend of his.

Durkin jnr, from Portland, Dorset is in his fifth season at this level, his earlier seasons having been dogged by injuries which seem to be behind him. His one previous Southend match was at Eastleigh in 2021/22. A 1-1 draw which was a very stop/start affair, not necessarily his fault. Cautions to Hobson, Husin and Cardwell plus two of theirs.

This season his 6 games have produced a high-ish 31 yellows and 3 reds.

Over the years he’s refereed Yeovil half a dozen times and they’ve only won once.

Assistants are both new to Southend: Antony Smith from Christchurch and Ryan Saward from Bristol. Standing by as Fourth Official will be Paul Barber from Bournemouth, just as he was for the League match at Yeovil two years ago.

For those travelling, I’d recommend the uniquely named Quicksilver Mail pub. The landlord's father played for Yeovil in one of our Cup shock defeats way back (when losing to non-league teams was a real shock) and there was a framed copy of the programme and other matches in their Cup run that year, proudly displayed on the wall when I was last there. A “proper” pub and in the GBG for those who like that sort of thing.
