First Away Game Seen

Away v Brighton December 1973 at the now defunct Goldstone Ground

Dad kidded Mum that it would be good to go Xmas shopping in Brighton. She did - we went to the Goldstone.

Lost 2-0, had two men sent off, and it was freezing. Seemed to set a trend.

Anyone else there (those of you who were born of course)?

Tranmere in 96/97 season on Good Friday 28th of March i think. we lost 3-0
was only 6, so am I the youngest away starter (as far as i know on this board) as well?

IIRC mine must have been the 2-0 loss at Luton, in the 2001/2002 season.

Rubbish game....

i think it was the 1984 against col united in the FA cup replay we lost 3-2. it was the night the col u fans knifed ginge.

Infact my away record really is something to behold:

Orient 2-0 win
Cambridge 0-0 draw
Cambridge 1-0 win
Northampton ?-? draw (1-1 or 2-2)
Chesterfield 1-1 draw
Wycombe 1-0 win
Col Ewe 3-2 win
Col Ewe won on pens
Lincoln 1-1 draw
Rushden 4-1 win
Sc**thorpe 1-1 draw
Macclesfield 2-1 loss
Notts County 2-1 win

7 wins, 5 draws, 1 loss

Aldershot away in the early weeks of our Division 4 promotion season 1989/90 where we managed to win 5-0 thanks in part to 2 own goals....the 2nd of which was scored by a certain Mr Steve Wignall!!

My next away trip came just a few weeks later at Gillingham....where we LOST 5-0!!

I believe mine was 1978, Jan 7th... the FA Cup against Div 1 (now Premier$hite) Derby County at their old pitch, the Baseball Ground. We were 3-0 down after an hour, then rallied, got 2 back, and Colin Morris was running clean through when he was brought down by Colin Todd in a tackle that today would have been a straight red. The Derby boss (who I believe was Cloughie) said that he would have put Morris "over the stand" if he had been making the tackle. Would that have brought a disrepute charge today?

Blimey that is good!

Can't remember my first away game but it would have been late 80's. Off the top of my head it could have been at Brentford. It chucked it down with rain all afternoon and we got moved from the open terrace into the stand along the side. Made the 4-0 (?) defeat that much more enjoyable I can tell you.

Wouldnt suprise me.

Northampton FA Cup 2nd round 1986/87, 4-4 or 2-1!?! I know there was a replay but I cant remember wether we played home or away first! Shocking I know!

20/3/87, C********r 1-2 Southend, I clearly remember this one for two reasons, firstly Peter Johnsons wondergoal - he seems to dribble it from one side of the pitch to the other and then back again at which point he let fly and it flew in. The Second is that the catering facilities consisted of a young lad with a tea urn on a trolley and he ran up and down the edge of the pitch fetching and carrying hot drinks to people. Oh and thirdly the wooden terrace that you could bounce up and down on.....a real hole in those days, its much more luxurious now

2-0 Ben Abbey got both, fantastic trip
Same as me! Not a bad way to start the fortunes of following Southend away from home.

Happy days...

Away at Birmingham early 90s, when Dave Martin got sent off and Andy Ansah equalised in the last five minutes.

i remember those games, 5-0 at Gillingham was ridiculous, i didn't know Wignall scored an o.g. thats wel funny!

my first away game was Northampton at the old County Ground we lost 2-1, Richard Cadette scoring. Apr 1987, i would have been 6 nearly 7, start of a love affair!
