same game bruv, hehehe

yeah we lost 2-1!

C********r away in 71.  Just looked up the attendance and was astounded to find it was 9609.  I remember walking back to the station afterwards and being in the middle of an enormous crowd of Shrimpers, we had about 5000 of us up there that day and outnumbered the Col Ewes.  Got beat though!

My first away game Watford April 78 top of the table clash they went up as Champions we were runners up. Their manager was Graham Taylor chairman Elton John. We got a creditable draw and it was featured on Match of the Day.

Fairly certain it was a 4-0 defeat at QPR in December 1996. Often been unlucky with away games - think I didn't see us win away until April 1999, when we won 3-0 at Plymouth.

17 November 1990 - FA Cup 1st Round vs Leyton Borient - Lost 3-2.

Remember very clearly standing on the open terrace with it raining through the whole match. Still, it let us concentrate on the league though (we should of won Div 3 that season).

First games were
Wed 20 September 1989 v Tottenham Hotspur in the Littlewoods Cup Round 2 1st Leg which we all know we lost by 1-0 in front of 15734 - there seemed to be legions of Shrimpers.
First League game
Sat 31 March 1990 v Maidstone United in Division 4 we lost 1-0 in front of 3550.

I remember taking a double decker supporters coach to the game and being housed in a temporary stand - that didnt feel the safest.

My first away game was when we won promotion at Stockport, i flew to the game with the team and thought to myself i quite liked traveling this way. I came down with a bump when i later went without my father to Port Vale for my first away game on my own, only for the aircon to break down and the coach was told to wait outside of Vale until a police escort could be arranged.

Quote[/b] (West Country Shrimper @ Jan. 04 2005,21:21)]IIRC mine must have been the 2-0 loss at Luton, in the 2001/2002 season.

Rubbish game....
What, the Bank Holiday fixture in August?  Rubbish ref spoiled a great game, and it was an afternoon of awesome away support from the Shrimpers Army, with over 1,000 of us in the away end of Kenilworth Road.

If you want a "rubbish game", then that phrase is given an almost textbook definition by (say) our 3-0 defeat at Nene Park the following season.  Now that really was  unmitigated rubbish...

My first away game: Ipswich 1 - 0 Southend, 7th September 1991 at Portman Road.  Andy Ansah was, as I recall, particularly unlucky not to score; and that season's eventual champions didn't really outplay us that much...

1997, a 2-0 FA Cup win over Woking - pretty tense until the last couple of minutes when Nathan Jones scored a great free kick and then dived into the supporters on the open terrace at the side of the pitch! Gridelet headed the second in injury time.

My first away game was 18th Jan 94 v Luton FA Cup 3rd Round, beaten 1-0.

I also went to a Charlton game around the same time I remember being in the South End of the ground but don't remember the score. Looking at the fixtures for around then it could have been the 3-4 game in april 94 but I'm sure I would have remebered that. If not it must have been the the 1-3 loss in December.

Either way I started my away trips with 2 losses ...Good old Southend! My recoerd since hasn't been a lot better !

When was the last away game Southend played at Roots Hall... that'll be the first one!

Think it was against Canvey in 2000?

Brentford away int he LDV in...hmm...can't be arsed to look it up so I'll say 2000.

Classic cup tie. Curling free-kick from Searle gave us hope after losing the first leg 2-1 to a couple of special Michael DObson goals. Laid siege to their goao and Carruthers missed a golden opportunity to seal the win. Gottskalksson got injured and we thought we were in. In comes unknown lad Smith who is now being touted for bigger things and he pulls of a string of great saves.

At some point Ipoua (maybe, maybe not) scores two and the long journey back, getting lost through the tube network ensues...

Small correction - Northampton was indeed 4-4 home in the cup - Cadette scored 3 and I still have a slkightly grainy video of the goals. The replay was a 3-2 defeat - a certain Ian Benjamin scored two for the Cobblers, both penalties I think.
However my first away was probably Col Ewe or Gillingham, around about 1968 John McKinven was playing.
Then Swindon amd Mansfield away in the Cup - I'm sure that was 1968 (from memory!).

Didn't travel much in my younger days so my First away game (not counting pre-seasons at Billericay and Basildon) would have been the 3-0 defeat at Newport in the last game of the 79-77 season

Quote[/b] (Napster @ Jan. 05 2005,09:39)]Away at Birmingham early 90s, when Dave Martin got sent off and Andy Ansah equalised in the last five minutes.
A classice Dave Martin right hook if I remember correctly. I have it on video somewhere. These days he would have got done for GBH.

This will take some beating, first true away game was August 1987 when we narrowly lost 8-1 at Gillingham. Thankfully things have improved since then. (I did actually see Southend draw 1-1 at Orient in 83/84 but I sat in the home seats having been dragged along by a relative and really went along for something to do rather than as an away fan, so I don't count this as my first proper away game.)

Grimsby in the 1991 glory season, i got the coach. All I remember is as soon as we got to Grimsby some guy running straight off the coach and havin it with about 10 Grimsby fans.

Also two boozed guys singing David Webbs Yellow Army for the entire second half (quality). Then the coach had to wait for the same guy to finish chasing the Grimsby fans around town b4 we could leave.

Ahh and we lost 1-0.

I went to that one and left when they scored their 6th thinking it couldn't get any worse. Driving home up the A2 turned the radio on to find they had scored another 2. Then on Boxing Day they stuffed us 4 nil so it certainly got worse.

Mine would have to be last season FA Cup 1st Round Replay Vs Canvey which we won 3-2. Tes and two wonder goals by Jay Smith. One of the best games I've been to and I managed to get my face on Sky Sports.

Then away Vs Lincoln this season with the 1 all draw. Drewenaldo and Gray ran their socks off and we got a lucky penalty.

Finally, boxing day Vs Wycombe. What and atmosphere and a great game to watch. A fully deserved 1 nil win thanks to Freddy.
