First game for a child

This is a good point too. My one liked football, but after the World Cup in 2018, he loves the game. Easy to segway into going to the Thames Estuary Galacticos.
Yeah, absolutely. Having loved the World Cup, my son just wanted to see some live football. Wherever I took him first, he was going to fall in love with it. Didn't matter that he wasn't watching Ronaldo or Messi, to him at that age our players were the same level, and he totally got into the thrill of a live match, and I think a lot of that was down to how easy it is to get up close and personal to the players in the family enclosure. That's what kept him coming back, and why he still goes. He's never been interested in the Prem and I'm really proud of that. When I can't take him to Roots Hall then he goes to Billericay Town with his Grandad (a lifelong BTFC season ticket holder).

This weekends game vs Solihull Moors will be the first game of the season I’m able to attend, but more importantly, I’m going to be taking my eldest son, who is 3, along for his very first football match. I’m sure his mind will change between now and then a million times, but I’ve now booked the tickets.

He got his junior blues hat through, and has been wearing it round the house. When I asked about going, and said he can wear his Southend shirt, he then said “and the hat”, so thank you Junior Blues for that.

We are going to get the train, go to the fish house, pop into the Club shop, do it all properly. Not sure about the pub, don’t think he’ll get served yet.

What advice would you give for bringing a young child along for his first game. Bag full of snacks? Headphones for the noise? A phone with full charge in case the game isn’t brilliant?

I don’t think he’ll sit in his seat properly the whole game, and we may not even make the full 90 minutes at the ground, but hopefully it’s the start of a love affair for him 🤞

At the other end of the scale I took my mum for her first ever game aged 85. We sat down near the front so she could get close to the action. She loved the singing, chanting and meeting the lads in the bar.

She couldn't remember anything by the time we got home but I had proved my point to other family members. Saturday afternoons when Southend are at home means I'm not available to mum sit......At least mum will die as a Shrimper.

Thanks for the advice.

He seems excited for tomorrow. I’ve been not making it all about the football, keep mentioning the train, fish & chips, the Club Shop and so on.

Also, Rhys from the Club reached out to me, and the two of us will be watching the game in the directors box tomorrow, with aisle seats to cause the least disruption when he needs the toilet, or we need to get out early. Access to the Captains lounge if he needs to go away from the game to relax and come back to it.

We truly have some fantastic people working at our great Club.

As a result, I have a spare adult and child ticket for East Yellow if anyone needs a ticket for tomorrow. It’s an e-ticket, so I can email it across to you 👌

Don't forget that there is now very limited seating in the Fish House and weather forecast not good for eating al fresco. Hope you both enjoy the game.

Definitely visit the lovely loos just before kick off - that way you’ll only have to get up twice, in the first 45 mins, for him to pee 😂

Doesn't work when mum is doing the swearing!
Its pretty interesting to me psychologically. In this current climate where you cant say boo to a goose without someone getting offended.

Its one of the last places where you can stand up and within some reason shout what you like. Total rage going to total joy in the space of a minute, thousands of people celebrating at once and the pack mentality of being around other fans. I hope it stays this way.

I always used to say to my dad the worst games are when we didnt score. Seen hundreds over the years when we lost of course. But when we dont score and you dont get that rush of adrenalin as you leap up and cheer a goal is a bummer.

Couldn’t have picked a better game for Jack’s first ever Southend United match.

He woke up at 5 this morning, and was shattered come kick off. However, we got through the 90 minutes, leaving moments before the full time whistle for a wee.

Ate all the snacks, played on the phone for the majority of the game, and was scared when the first went in, but loved it by number 5.

Think the train was probably still his favourite part of the day, but we got fish and chips, we both got the yellow away shirt, and he said he’d like to come with Daddy again, so I’m taking that as the biggest win of the day.

David Crown took us pitch side, spoke to Cav Miley, however my son is very shy at first, won’t shut up once he is comfortable, but was really shy. Got some pictures down there and then asked if we could play on the pitch, but I explained that they had paid for it then he asked if I could.
