I am currently playing the beta version.

I haven't played many matches yet but have learned that more defensive mentalities are much better in FM23. In previous versions you just get battered for 90 minutes and inevitably concede. In FM23 you can actually play defensively and use counter-attacks to score while keeping things tight at the back. A big change from FM22.

On the other side, attacking mentalities leak a lot of goals. I started with my usual tactic which has an attacking or positive mentality and while I scored a few goals I conceded a lot too. Since switching to a defensive or cautious mentality things have been much more settled defensively while still creating plenty of chances at the other end.

Anyone else playing the beta version?

I've got the beta but still playing FM22 with Southend having just survived my first season in the Prem.

Will probably do a couple more seasons on that one then move over to 23 once the full game is out

It looks like they have reverted the match engine back to FM22 as the defensive tactics no longer work as they did previously. I decided to go back to my old gegenpress tactic that was useless in FM23 and it is suddenly very successful. It is a bit of a shame as the success of defensive tactics was a good thing, in my opinion.

SUFC 2022/23's default squad ratings here:

  Spoiler:
1668548889934.pngNot sure who rates Cosgrave that highly or Hyde that badly, Mooney seems pretty low too, Clifford and JD possibly a little high for me.

Explains a lot.

  Spoiler:
I signed Cosgrave on a permanent after the first season as he had some potential. Sent Hyde back to Wrexham in the January transfer window of the first season as he was useless.

I managed to win promotion from the National League in the first season despite some mid-season hiccups with the match engine being "tweaked" rendering my tactics useless. Ron then opened the war chest and I had over a million in the transfer budget and a decent wage budget for the first season back in the league. A lot of players left in the off season as their contracts expired so I brought in a lot of decent league 2 standard players with League 1 potential and stayed within budget.

I tried offering Kacper a new contract but he failed the work permit requirements so activated his contract extension meaning he should be able to get English citizenship before his contract runs out.

Currently in first place in League 2 with 15 games left as my old gegenpress tactic has us scoring goals for fun. Got knocked out of the FA Cup by Man Utd losing 5-3 (!!) at the Hall.

Flying to Australia at the end of December so will see how many seasons I can get through before we land! Lol

Hi all, don't know if anyone else is having this problem but I'm in 2030 on FM23 and the game takes so long to load. Takes around 45 minutes in between matchdays. My setup is 459k players loaded in (I like to have all players available!!) but just English leagues loaded in.

In FM22 I had exactly the same game set up and worked fine, I was in 2067 and had no issues at all. Anyone got any tips on how to increase game speed!!

Only got the game on 27th December, but first season played 26 games and in 2nd place so far.

Got rid of Nathan Ralph for £27K plus clauses.

Bought in:

Luke Rees
Joe Maguire
Blondy, to let me loan colin to Braintree
Kyle Howkins

So far up by £6.5k on transfers and within budget on wages.

Doing something a bit different this year and trying to get Concord up the leagues.

First season was a season of transition but second season we're flying! Mark Gowers son Jimi is pulling the strings in midfield and also got a regen striker up front who's banged in 43 goals by the end of Feb!

Also got the quarter finals of the FA Trophy to play at home to Bromley having beaten Chesterfield 5-3 in the last round.

Blimey you are right about the budget increase upon achieving promotion. Cyber Ron has upped the transfer budget to £2.2m and the wage budget to £42.5K from £28.5k!!!!!

Went up via the play offs after finishing 2nd. Beat Wrexham 6-0 in the semi and Solihull 3-1 at Wembley.

He must have found a second war chest. It was a pleasant surprise in the game as getting out of the NL was the aim but I was worried about whether I could improve the squad for League 2 running on fumes. Then I'm informed I have a million to play with and decent wage budget, I was shocked.

I haven't played this save in a while. I got to the Premiership and was ground sharing at Crystal Palace while the Steve Tilson Arena was being built!

I ran into a glitch where Shaun Hobson (yes, he was still a first team player as we went into the Premier League) was unhappy about the lack of depth in midfield and I promised him I'd get someone in to allay his concerns. I did and he said he was delighted with me keeping my promise but the game forgot to remove his unhappiness and his moaning tanked morale and I got fed up with the save as there was nothing I could do to fix it. I eventually caved and bought the in-game editor to remove his unhappiness but it didn't feel like it was a genuine game after that tinkering and I lost interest. Still have the saved files so I can always go back and play on.

I haven't had any issues and have played into the 2030's with a large number of leagues. Maybe go to the SI games forum and report it as a bug. Just make sure you can upload the save game file for them to look at.

Yes, if you're financially frugal in the first season you can reap the rewards. Problem with FM is that debt like what we have isn't able to be accurately shown.

I'm usually a lover of FM but haven't got it this year. The constant tinkering with FM22 by the devs ruined my tactics all the time and I got right ****ed off.

I've been drawn in by the FIFA PC modding community. I've managed to get the 'assets' and relevant mods to make Southend in the EFL.

I will be doing a road to glory Southend career mode with a heavy focus on the youth team and bringing back some ex-players.

I haven't been able to do the kits (instead using a custom kit mod that is pretty close) but I've got the badge and the players I decided to add to the FIFA database.

I chose to make:
  • Arnold
  • Collin
  • GSM
  • Demi
  • Hobson
  • Kensdale
  • Lopata
  • Taylor
  • Wes
  • Miley
  • Powell
  • Bridge
  • Wreh
If anyone is remotely interested I'll make a FIFA thread

Yes, the FM developers have tinkered with the game a lot for FM23.

When the beta was released my usual tactic was useless which was fine by me as it forced me to adapt a new tactic. I finally got a defensive tactic working with Southend and then suddenly things changed and the tactic wasn't working as well as it was. I figured that the match engine had been "tweaked" so tried my old tactic to see what happens and it was successful again as it had been in previous FMs.

I was a bit disappointed as the new defensive tactic I had developed was probably more realistic for a NL team and I was enjoying seeing us scrap 1-0 wins.

As for FIFA, I think the last time I played FIFA was FIFA 14 or something.

Absolutely gutted! Finished 2nd on 93 points then ballsed up the playoffs losing to Oxford City in the semis 😔

My young striker dried up a bit but still managed 50 goals in all comps but there's no chance I'll get him on loan again now.

Now for the summer - need to try and hold onto my gems but the finances look terrible so might need to sell to stay afloat

2nd season and the L2 title is the Mighty Blues.

Signed Dallas and Soule form Solihull and York respectively and they scored 46 goals between them.

Junior Quitirna signed from Waterford added another 16 from attacking midfield in a 4-1-2-1-2 vertical tika-taka with wingbacks.

Finances are OK and some current favourites to be shipped out this close season such as Wreh and Powell, who are out on loan anyway.

Onwards and upwards.

You got it on steam? If not you might not be on the latest patch

Yes, I bought it on Steam so the latest patch should be installed.

I haven't had the issue occur again yet but there are some other weird ones like when you win the league with a few matches to go and at then end of the last game the game says despite winning promotion it was a disappointment to miss out on the title in the last game.

Overall, I think the game is still a bit rough around the edges even after the patches. A lot of the issues are not all that crucial to the game play so I just ignore them for the most part. The issue with player happiness was something that impacted the game a lot which is why I downloaded the in-game editor to fix it and now have to disable it for future saves.

I finally got round to starting on FM23.

My Southend save hasn't started too badly, I was top for a little while heading into November, but now I'm about 4th.

Obviously, no money to spend, so I have been reliant on John Still wheeling and dealing in the background, I managed to get 2 lads in on loan from Peterbro' who have both been very effective, Kai Corbett (winger) and Joe Taylor (striker).

Jack Wood has been a revelation also. Tom Clifford is something of a FK specialist. I cut short Aaron Cosgrave and Jake Hydes loans to try and give me some more room on the wage bill. I sold Nathan Ralph to Charlton for around 27k, Looking to offload Murphy and Cardwell too. Cards was injured from August until Xmas, and then picked up another knock just as he was getting fit again.

The game echoes real life closely sometimes....
