Post-Match Thread and Ratings Gateshead 0-0 Southend United

the screening was fine but thought needs to be given to how to manage multiple queues -two for the toilets and one for bar,one for food as the corridors were rammed .
Spot on. The East Stand food/ bog/ beer melee at half time is always bad but today was worse than ever. Only when a security guy brought some order, did things improve (well done to him -performance rating 10). I'd suggest that the food queue goes up the glass "tunnel" leaving the bog corridors clearer for those in need of a bladder empty as well giving clearer movement along the corridor from the stand. Put a security person to maintain a gap between food stall and the counter, so the corridor's clear for movement and two people are at the foodstall Can't wait til the East Stand is redeveloped. Maybe allowing access to other toilets may have helped today.

People are being a bit harsh on Hopper, it's not a coincidence that Gateshead's most threatening spell happened once he'd been taken off. If we'd needed a win then his performance would have been poor but I imagine he was doing exactly what Maher told him to today - take no risks and focus on keeping possession.
Thought he had a very solid game

Appreciate that today was just about getting the result which we did. But again we were completely unconvincing, don’t create chances, and towards the end of the game when we are breaking three on two we go for the corner flag rather than the goal. Some of our tactics were again weird - towards the end of the game we had Miley and Husin both sat in front of the defence but with Miley to the right of Husin. We should be thankful that Gatehead were awful.

Probably not the day for a post like this, but at least my position on how this team is managed is consistent, rather than only complaining after a defeat.
I wasn’t going to dampen everyone’s spirits etc but I do agree. I thought first half we did well and had a go, we just weren’t good enough up top, but second half we came out not to lose, thankfully it worked and we’re in the playoffs but I hate the approach of inviting pressure on to ourselves.

I didn’t think we’d reach the playoffs so well done everyone at the club, a great achievement.
I expected nothing less at the start of this season and they’ve delivered. I just don’t like the style of play a lot of the time. UTB.

Just got home, BOT Service was 1st class, result 1st class, stadium……
And how did Gateshead come up with the attendance figures if they are saying there were 1700 ish of us that means they are claiming that the stand opposite had 2500 + Heed fans…never in a million years!
Thats stand opposite holds around 3000 so it was probably about right. I think they also include season ticket holders that dont attend too. Great support by us though.

I initially thought the same but when you look at their vlogs it's amazing how sparse 1700 look from the other side.

As to the game no it wasn't a classic but we were rarely threatened and apart from a dodgy header back across were solid. The much maligned Bridge and Hopper are invaluable to this team. Sure both should be scoring more goals but clearly opposition managers rate them more than some of our fans given the doubling up defending.

As to the stadium I think the best that can be said is at least it's not the Withdean. Also incredibly easy to get to and from by car and the Fog on the Tyne isn't the worst away fan boozer in the world. I was there over an hour before I realised it was literally right next to the Tyne!

First 10 to 12 minutes were good - I thought we needed to score. Best chance fell to Goodliffe but plenty of corners & attacking intention.

Then I started to notice the seagulls & for the rest of the half I watched the seagulls above the pitch quite a lot ............
GSM skied a clearance which went close to one of the gulls. A Heed fan behind me shouted "Leave wor gulls alone man."

You can count our fans if you like.... don't forget to add one. 🙂

Couldn't attend today so decided to purchase a stream pass from DAZN and what a stressful experience that was.It was awfull poor sound quality picture constantly jumping.DAZN recently said to me that the reason they decided to increase the cost ot pass from £9.99 to £14.99 was to improve the service. Would be interested to learn what others think.

As far as the game was concerned we totally controlled the game but just couldn't find the goal we needed, which sums up the team no cutting edge.

We got the result we needed so on to Rochdale to continue the venture
I used DAZN for the first time. I wasn't to sure how good it would be, having read on here the problems people have had.
On my lap top sound and picture fine. However when I cast to my 65 inch tv and enlarged the cast picture to fill the screen, the image would stutter slightly. Before enlarging it was fine. Apparently this is not uncommon for many reasons that I found listed, when I Googled the problem. But as I say very watchable on my 15 inch lap top.

Massaging income figures probably!

We were absolutely brilliant yesterday. Anyone that says otherwise needs to seriously have a word with themselves. There's some comments about 'not playing entertaining football', are you joking?! That was not what we needed to do. We had a job to do and we did it amazingly well.

I turned to my dad and said, we look like a playoff team. You have to be hard to beat, to have a chance of winning the playoffs, we were certainly that yesterday. Anyone that has ever said that Maher doesn't know what he's doing, just watch that match back. The attention to detail with our shape was flawless. You could see the amount of work that had gone into that setup. Even when the subs came on, they all slotted in perfectly. Every single player knew their job and executed it brilliantly.

Also, when are some fans actually going to start praising the team and management, rather than keep saying the opposition are rubbish?! We smacked Wealdstone and people were saying it's because they were terrible. They beat Halifax yesterday, who incidentally are 6th! Then fans were saying, "Let's see how we do in the next game, Gateshead have scored a lot more goals than us." They had one shot on target and we made them punt it long. That was all because of how well we played. It pains the small minority to admit it, but we are a good team.

We have a serious chance now. We play a Rochdale side that we've beat away. It will be a tight game but they will have to be really good to beat us. Kev has plenty of time to work on the strategy and really drill it into the players. We will be ready, make no mistake about it. Utb!

We have a serious chance now. We play a Rochdale side that we've beat twice. It will be a tight game but they will have to be really good to beat us. Kev has plenty of time to work on the strategy and really drill it into the players. We will be ready, make no mistake about it. Utb!
Completely agree. we've conceded 2 in our last 7. our defense is rock solid and we have 8 attackers all competing for 4 spots in the team, which is an excellent situation to be in. we're not blasting teams away, but Rochdale will be really concerned about how they break us down.

Thanks for your comments.I was streaming via my laptop to my tv and had similar issues.Next time will just use the laptop to see if it improves

We did what we needed to. I never expected us to go out to put on an attacking game, but that's how we started. Once we didn't take those chances, then it became imperative not to concede, and that never looked to be likely to happen.

I'm glad some on here can see what Hopper brings to the side, his nous, his defensive qualities, experience and reading of the game are so important. For whatever reason, I didn't think he and Kendall were on the same wavelength yesterday, whether that was Charley's nerves or not I don't know, but Bonne coming on was desperately needed.

I thought there were a couple who seemed a bit over-awed by the situation, Keenan took a while to settle in and Coker lost his way a bit. In fact, I thought that was one of the poorest midfield displays I'd seen for a while, as Husin was fairly invisible. The defence, however, all stepped up and I thought Bridge looked very good.

Really like Goodliffe (or Goodlife, as the commentator insisted on calling him on DAZN - we thought the sound was poor, incidentally, had to turn our volume up really loud!), I said last match that I think he's what we've been missing since Kensdale left - without the serious mistake that Kensdale inevitably had in him.

It wasn't a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but we closed things down when we needed to and, despite hearts going into our mouths a couple of times late on, especially when Nouble got the ball in dangerous places and you just feared that he was going to be gloating at our fans again, we never really looked seriously threatened, and held on to secure that vital point.

Now Kevin, Benno and Darren will need to work on a different strategy to progress, but fortunately, we have time to prepare.

A great day out, with fantastic support and a very deserved outcome.

My MOTM was Goodliffe.

We used to have trouble with the NLTV last season by casting, now we just use the DAZN app and haven't had any problems this season. The only issue yesterday was with the sound level and an inept commentator.
