Official Match Thread Gateshead v Southend United

Best player on the pitch is Gateshead's number 8 Ed Francis. Plays the Cav Miley role. Everything he does is effortlessly. 24 year old signed from Notts County in the summer having joined on loan in March. 6ft. A must buy if funds allow.

We have to remember that we have had our whole midfield ripped out today which has led to changing the back 3 as well. That has led to GSM playing more cautiously as he doesn't have Taylor next to him.

Plenty of times it has gone to a player looking to play it inside into the space that Wes is normally in to drive forward and no one is there. There isn't much cohesion due to the personnel changes and that is affecting decision making.

Mooney is a complete passenger in this team and offers absolutely nothing. Maybe it's not his fault, maybe it is, who knows. All I know is, it doesn't work in this setup. I'd rather Wood play in midfield and try to fill that hole that is currently being left bare.

Having said all that, we've had a few chances and are still well in the game. Keep it tight for the first 10 and try and nick something. I said pre-match that I would have been happy with a point. I'd be really happy now given the circumstances.

The thing with Mooney is he can look good, and up for it when coming on as a sub. But when starting a game, he sort of ambles about and protects himself, and ducks 50/50 challenges. He looks a much poorer player when starting. We can get so much better after the takeover.
Anytime he's on the pitch we're down to 10 men.

Especially since our system relies on hard work regardless of whether we're in possession or not.

What makes you think he'll come down this way. Plenty of options more locally.

To be fair to kev it's clear mooneys only on the pitch due to such limited availability of alternatives. Plus, I very much doubt his engine can last 90 mins anyway. Just doesn't understand two touch or physical stuff. Head down and run every time!
We seem to have had a lot of chances and if we can stick one away early second half a draw would be a bri!lunar result. Other than their goal which was a great shot, they have been pretty restricted in decent chances.
Plus with cards, kensdale and kabo on the end of corners crosses and throws, there will be some more chances

Imagine blaming Mooney solely for their goal, when they walked through 3-4 of our players on the edge of the box.

Embarrassing whatever happens on these long distance coach journeys/hotel team talks.
Reminds me of not tackling in the second half at Boreham Wood where they could have had at least 3...

What's all this brillunar stuff then?

Pennyfather highlighting Mooney's lack of defensive work, but I'd argue its not too dissimilar to Bridges - I guess the midfield can only cope with 1 player not working back with vigour
