Sounded a valiant effort by the team in an attempt to salvage a point. No doubt a fair chunk of the 1700 that went will give their opinions on here soon. We don't appear to be getting too much referee love at the moment.

Gillingham 2-1 Southend United

Woeful, never looked threatening in the first half and whilst we dominated with ten men second half, they were a very poor side and on another day when we turn up we could've been out of sight by half time. Unfortunately we didn't.

Now, a rant about the refereeing. The penalty was never a penalty, complete dive as soon as he felt Demetriou near him. Ryan Inniss was stupid for a needless first yellow, the second was a clear foul on him, then the two came together, no idea how the linesman saw that as their foul let alone a second yellow. Fell for their theatrics and the crowd every time.

Their second goal was shocking defending, Demetriou shown up in particular but no one was blameless.

Second half, Robinson made a much bigger impact than Ranger, we never really had a serious chance until Robinson's superb cross for Ranger.

Smith 6 Two good saves, kicking is beyond poor.
Demetriou 7 Caught out for the second goal but our biggest attacking threat second half.
Thompson 5.5 Worst he has played in a long, long time, missed Ferdinand alongside him.
Inniss 4 Idiotic first yellow, reaction after being sent off was ridiculous.
Coker 6 Much like Demetriou but to a lesser extent
McGlashan 5 Nothing came off for him at all, looked dangerous at times but end product never there.
Leonard 6.5 Battled hard and tried to drive forwards
Wordsworth 5 Anonymous
Timlin 7 Worked tirelessly throughout, constantly looking for the ball forwards
Cox 7 As above, was playing every position himself
Fortune 6 Not his usual self, looked a little tired

Subs
White 6 Solid enough
Ranger 6 Too lazy to chase down but some strength in the air
Robinson 7 Pace up front and brilliant cross for the goal

Game was all but over by half time thanks to some poor refereeing and poor defending for one moment. Very frustrating, on another day that's an easy three points. Heads up, hope Ferdinand is back next week and move on.

Just read that the ref, Dean Whitestone, is a Police Constable in the Met Police. Maybe he can arrest himself for the theft of 3 points.

I desperately hope we don't look back to this moment at the end of the season and wonder what if.

We could have got a point but a game destroyed by an incompetent official who fell to pieces. Just not time to detail his list of game changing mistakes. The football league are culpable - they know the history here regarding officials yet they supplied someone who simple could not cope with the situation.

Good to see Ranger score and earn a penalty (not given) when rugby tackled to the ground in the box late on.

not sure how many got booked at the final whistle- the card was being waved everywhere- best guess is a couple of our players, a linesman and two of the army of officials sent on to escort him off.

Match report: Gillingham 2, Southend United 1

TWO Josh Wright goals in quick succession saw 10 man Southend United sink to a 2-1 defeat at Gilingham this afternoon.

Onwards and upwards boys bad day in office , but the standard refs is really poor .Comeon FA get your act together .
It was a penalty again not given

Brown just done BBC Essex interview ripped into referee can see a touchline ban or stadium ban coming into play. I was shouting at radio telling him to shut up lol

Had to trudge back up the road with my Gillingham mates. Will comment on the performance after I have got over the shock of 3 defeats to Gillingham, but mostly that refereeing display. So poor I cant quite believe it. To the credit of my friends, staunch season ticket holders with Gills , they said that the penalty should never have been given, that Innis was clearly fouled first and that we could have had a shout for 4 penaltiesl I saw Fortune blatantly pulled down twice by the arm in the first half, let alone Mc Glashen and the two second half events. Off to a darkened room having bought a can of special brew fighting water. Ref never gave us a thing all afternoon, one of the worst Homer performances I have witnessed for along time.
P.S Superb dominant performance by Innis until the sending off !!

Why should he not be able to tell the truth- the FL should man up and address this type of performance not try any gag people so they can sweep it under the carpet?

We didn't turn up in fast half. Yes ref was poor at it wasn't a penalty, but Inniss was awful and I truly hope he doesn't play for us again. White was a big improvement second half and was a worthy stand in for Ferdy at Fleetwood and should be playing ahead of Inniss.

Inniss is a hot head with no positional sense and poor control, needs to go back to a Palace.

Much improved second half display, one to put behind us and on to Port Vale next weekend.

On another note Gillingham are one of those clubs like P'boro with an arrogant Chairman who think they are much better than they actually are and the away stand is terrible...remember now why I always try and avoid Gillingham away.

I do agree he should be able to speak his mind but unfortunately it doesn't work like that. Lost count how many times brown been in front of fa bigwigs?

Sounds like Atkinson won't have to wait long for his recall :winking:

I am critical of Brown when he does daft things like getting sent to the stand etc but all managers should be able to have an opinion after the game on very poor referees. They can cost teams promotion and big sums of money yet seem to be untouchable and nothing ever happens, even when they are being assessed.

It's about time these part time refs (copper during the week, totalitarian, egotistical monster on a Saturday) are shipped out and full time refs are employed.

Thee needs to be some sort of way of punishing these refs for very poor performances

I think the linesman has a lot to answer for as well - I have no idea why he thought Innis should be yellow carded and he missed a blantant push on McG

This has probably been asked before, but is the second booking for Inniss appealable?

I said to mates at 40 mins that it will take them scoring before we raise our game, as we looked so poor (both teams were). Unfortunately we were done for when Innis got sent off, agree he is a hot head and lacks positional sense. Strongly believe if we had kept eleven men on the pitch we would have taken at least a draw if not a win from the game. Very frustrating day

Just got back- absolutely livid
video of the joke sending off no do the rounds on twitter-
For those interested I suggest sharing the video that rivals the calamity linesman one with said vacuous bigwigs via

@football_league

As with calamity linesman they can sometimes be embarrassed into fronting up and reacting.

Towards the back of the stand by the standing areas there was getting roughly 2 people a seat blocking all the stair routes and noticed this a similar problem at millwall and franchiseFC with the stewards having to restrict access to parts of the crowded areas. With tbv continuously growing I think they should have more room allocated at local away games to prevent the overcrowding.
