Quote[/b] (Whatever @ Jan. 13 2006,18:19)]Seems like a fair account, but I agree he's a little too complimentary about his own team (but I guess it's understandable). They're clearly a good side - but the best squad in the division?!?
Not far off, is it?

Sorry this thread's been gnawing away at me!! Really amazed you're giving Halford flak for that article, I think all his comments are very sensible and he was perfectly complimentary about Southend!

Try to put partisan feelings aside for a sec?

I don't think it's a particularly outlandish claim, that a team 4 points off the top in League One (game in hand), on a run of 13 wins in 15 games, could COMPETE at Championship level.

And if you look at the quality of the squad - Halford and Danns WILL play in the Premier League. Word has it that we turned down a big offer from a Championship club for Iwelumo last week. Reading fans were surprised when they sold Kevin Watson to us as they thought he was their most creative midfielder. We have the best defensive record in the division and our player of the year from last season (centre back Pat Baldwin) can't break into the team. We regularly have Duguid, Garcia and Izzet on the bench - three players who would start for most teams in this division.

Or our other results - we went to Swansea - top of the table at the time - took the game to them and had ourselves to blame for only taking a point. We went Brentford - top of the table at the time - and didn't just beat them, swept them aside. We went to Sheffield United (they were slightly below strength) and beat them deservedly and quite easily. Take it from me it's a very, very good side.

As for the question of your first XI being better than ours... well, on the day in August it was. But Col U fans felt there were mitigating factors in our scratchy first few weeks, probably the biggest being Greg Halford's form - culminating in a mare for him at your place. And it was that result which brought things to a head for him and in turn kick-started our season. Since then we have been, give or take, pretty much the best team in the league.

Thing is, you'll always think we're crap - because we're Col U. If we play badly you'll say we're sh!t, if we play well you'll say we're sh!t, if we  get promoted this season you'll say we're going to come straight back down, blah blah blah! If either Southend or Col U achieve anything this season - and there's a way to go yet - then the real men in both camps will give credit where its due.

The league table doesn't lie, but it would be fair to say we are looking forward to your visit to Layer Road.
