Have you heard of Keith Park?

Clive James' take on the unveiling of a new Keith Park statue on the 'fourth plinth' at Trafalgar Square.

Also, unlike Mr James, I have no problems naming Mary Wakefield of the Independent as the disrespectful hack mentioned therein...

I think it would be very appropriate if Park got the fourth plinth on a permanent basis. A war hero of course, but the fact that he is a son of both Britain and New Zealand is a perfect demonstration of how much the old empire countries played a vital part in the World Wars.

His HQ during the Battle of Britain was in RAF Uxbridge, a very short walk from where I live, but civilians only get to visit the RAF base on special occasions (as far as I know). There is also a road in the town named after him, but seeing as it's actually inside of the base, very few people in the town would ever have travelled down it.

I was in Hornchurch recently and I noticed that the roads around Hornchurch Country Park (on the site of RAF Hornchurch) were all named after Wartime pilots, planes and airfields - unfortunately amongst all the Dowdings, Deeres, Tucks and Malan's, Park Lane doesn't really stand out as anything unusual...

There are loads of road names like this near Southend airport - Neil Armstrong Way springs to mind.

It is also a little known fact that the roads on Canvey Island are named after characters from Van der Valk and apartheid era South African politicians.
