That would be telling
With the link up work that BBBC does there is no way he can win the ball, lay it off and score the goals we need. Unless we start finding goals again I am worried for our season.
Let's hear your opinions on the answer,

Change the system, 4-5-1 means we control the midfield but we sacrifice attacking ability. If we can swtich to 4-4-2 we might concede a few more goals but I think we'd come out with a few more points

We tried 4-4-2 when Barnard arrived, it didn't work. We were scoring plenty of goals playing 4-5-1/4-3-3 from all round the team, but Hurst is out of form and he was our creative hub & top scorer, maybe we should try resting him for a game or two, it might help him find his mojo. I'd like to see Payne/Williams/Freddy/Barnard tried in Hurst / Straker's positions in attack. Think we also really miss Prosser at the back, he's been a rock this season and it seems like we've been conceding more since he's been out.

Agree with this. There is little to no competition for the place on the wings, although it might be tough for a couple of youngsters to come in and play out of position.

The problem we have is that although the 4 5 1 system suits us best, the burden then rests on goals coming from the midfield five. Atkinson, Timlin and Straker usually play well in that system but they are not people who get many goals, their record proves this.
The frustrating thing is that we have twenty goals a season players in the squad, Eastwood, Barnard and Corr. The first two are out of form and Corr's current role is not suited to scoring every other game.

3 - 5 - 2 has not been tried!

white - prosser - coker

hurst timlin leonard atkinson straker

barnard

.....................corr

in this league you can play it tight at the back but then find it hard to get goals or you play attacking football and leave the defence vulnerable. The limitations of our players are the reason for this. The opposition just stop Hurst and wait for our defence to mess up as the midfield fails to keep hold of the ball. Our good start was due mainly to Eastwood playing well and Straker. Why we play Corr so near our midfield is because of his lack of pace, but his first touch is bad too so no real threat to teams. Timlin is off form and any confidence in the team is ebbing away now. Bringing in Barnard has been a waste of time and money. If Williams is good enough to make the squad then give him a run. He is raw but no worse than Barnard Corr and Eastwood lately. The trip to Portugal did nothing for the squad either on the face of it. A good looking season start looks to be finished now with players tiring and no creativity in the side.

Paul Clark on the radio yesterday, said the same as me games ago. A lot of crosses are going into the penalty area with nobody there. Corr is playing too deep, and the midfield too defensive and not rushing into the box enough.

This is it for me. You either have corr deep and the widemen running on to the flick on, or have corr in the box winning the header.

We had neither, most of the time barry is either drawn to the edge of the box or out wide.

Plenty of options if we want to try something different:

3-5-2
Bentley,
White, Phillips, Prosser
Atkinson, Leonard, Laird, Timlin, Coker
Corr, Barnard

4-2-3-1
Bentley
White, Phillips, Prosser, Coker
Leonard, Timlin
Hurst, Clifford, Laird
Corr

4-1-3-2
Bentley
White, Phillips, Prosser, Coker
Laird
Leonard, Clifford, Timlin
Corr, Barnard

3-4-3
Bentley
White, Phillips, Prosser
Atkinson, Leonard, Laird, Coker
Eastwood, Corr, Hurst

The possibilities are endless! You can substitute your favourite defender if you've given up on Phillips, or your preferred midfielder if you think Leonard's more limited than people realise. You can't add Straker back in though, as it's like playing with 10 men and as such just silly.

You can use Straker...........but only immediately after his wife (partner) has given birth. :winking:

I'd prefer this out of those. Don't like 3 at the back at all. Wouldn't put Laird on the left though. Maybe Payne instead of Clifford too.

I've not given up on Phillips, but he isn't the player he was a few seasons ago when he won the PoTS award. Thompson will replace him soon. Not sure about the Leonard being "limited" comment either as he can defend, run with the ball, pass and score goals from distance so he could even play in the attacking midfield role if required.

Agree about Straker though, unless we play Chesterfield as he seems to enjoy playing them!
