The referee for the Huddersfield match will be making his first visit to Roots Hall as a League referee. Police Officer David Phillips from West Sussex referees his 12th ever League match in this his first season.

Although a rookie ref, this is no fast-tracked wonder kid as he started refereeing 27 years ago (before Stuart Attwell was born) and has just made it onto the League list.

His eleven league matches thus far have produced 30 yellows and 4 reds. He also was the referee who decided that 3 floodlights out of 4 were not producing enough light for the Grays/Carlisle match to continue when ironically a couple of weeks later Cup matches were being played in foggy conditions with far less visibility.

His most publicised moment also occurred at Grays, the previous season, when Jamie Stuart was sent off for a challenge which broke a York player's jaw and led him to be charged with, and acquitted of, grievous bodily harm at Basildon Crown Court nearly a year later.

Running the lines will be Ian Bentley (Kent) and Lee Collins (Surrey) with Eamonn Smith wielding the numbers board.

Late change of, hopefully, no great significance. Eamonn Smith has been despatched to Yeovil and Adrian Sannerude from Suffolk will be 4th official instead.

OMG! A rookie, and a copper as well, just what we need!

Hello hello hello, my son is police officer - before anyone gets on the waggon, an educated fair handed and not bent one either, but he does have a very good arrest rate of perps, few if any motorists, unless they have o/s warrants.

Where's the push for Respect gone ???

He doesn't like Grays much then..Let's hope it's not an Essex thing in general
