Transfer News, Gossip & Speculation James Morton Signs

Transfer news
I’ll write a scout report on Morton (probably next week) and will post on here.

But to me it looks like a good signing. At 24y/o, he fits in with our recruitment policy where we mainly look to sign players who are at an age where there is still room for improvement and have re-sale value.

I’m not sure yet if he’ll play at #6 (Miley’s role) or as the left-sided #8 (Fonguck’s role), but we’ll hopefully learn more tomorrow!

Welcome to SUFC James ,hopefully yourself and family can settle in well in Southend and you can have a long and fruitful career with my beloved team.
Question for any off the ITK , James signing from WSM will SUFC now play a preseason friendly against WSM if so hopefully it will be a strong Southend side that is sent there,

“I love the title of being called a quarterback, I love getting on the ball and being the one who starts attacks and playing through lines,” says Morton. “I know I should add goals to my game but passing means just as much to me — an assist, a good cross, or a diagonal ball, whatever it would be, that brings great joy to me. I would like to be an all-round midfielder, I’d like to add bits of the No 8 to my game. People would say that I’m more of a holding midfielder but I see myself as being able to do more than that.”

Dangerous to judge from highlights but it looks like he’ll add something we don’t currently have with that quality on the ball. Some of those passes were superb. We haven’t really had anyone who regularly switches it since Shaun Hobson got homesick. Hobson loved to pick out Bridge but from WSM’s highlights it’s GSM who’s going to be seeing a lot of the ball.

If this works this could unlock another level to this side. The downside will be if we lose too much defensively (I’m guessing someone with that amount of ability isn’t going to be great defensively if he’s in non-league rather than the Championship) and it destroys the balance in midfield. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes some time to find the right balance. After a spell of enforced continuity we’re going to enter a time of uncertainty.

Last time out of embargo Maher added Kensdale as his first addition. He became integral to the way we developed. Morton is another statement that we’re going to pass our way out of this division. Like our build up play it’s going to require patience but will hopefully be worthwhile.

Yeah I'd ignore the highlights reel - they're not gonna show all the balls that go out for a throw etc.

Adds some interesting competition in midfield. Last season seemed to favour 2 defensive with Taylor and Miley with Husin as the attacking midfielder. I see him taking the Taylor role maybe. With Husin, Wes and Coker fighting it out for the attacking role?

Again cautiously looking at the highlights he seems like a footballer who has an excellent passing range and likes to protect the ball ... Decent with a dead ball ... Didn't we used to have a player called Maher who used to be fairly tidy at these aspects of the game? Can't think where the attraction came from for Morton ...

Another positive is that being at Bristol City for 10 years early in his career, he won't be phased about coming to a larger ex league club, he'll know what is expected within the set up in general.
Maher likely knew of him from his Bristolian connections and so far he's been proven to be a good judge of both a players temperament and ability.

In King Kevin we trust, he Still, Currie and Bentley are the best management team I've seen in all my years, Obviously I liked Dave Smith, Webby, Fry, Tilly, Chris Powell and even Brown, to a degree but this combination has my complete confidence and I am very pleased the new regime has them signed up!
