Whats your point?

Our natural position if League attendances are a measurement is around 8th in League One.

However based on your reasoning that we shouldnt be down there (which I agree with) the same could also be applied to us being in the Championship too. Bet you wouldnt complain if that was where we were.

Unfortunately we are down and thats that, at least we can chase for promotion next year...

we should not be down here -

Why?

We're here on merit. We can't call fans of Leeds and Forest and the like arrogant for thinking that their teams are above the third tier if we then do the same about the fourth. People need to get over it and realise that this is the reality of the situation.

I'd be very surprised if we average much over 6000 next season anyway. If Oxford go up, they'll probably top us as well.

If we are doing well and are chasing promotion then we'll get good gates. If we don't then we won't.

We certainly do deserve to be relegated but in the bigger scheme of things we should be able with the size we are to maintain a league one status.

However as you say no team us guaranteed safety in any league and the crippling financial problems we had did for us this season.

Agree with you, apart from 3 or 4 teams away support will be virtually non existant, and unless we are punching our weight in the top 10, non STH will soon get despondant and stay away. Added to the fact that irrelevant of what party wins the election this week, we are all going to lose more of our disposable income due to the situation wer'e in. This will also have an effect if we are mid table.

Having one of the richest men in the country as the chairman tends to help !

Ok that's fair enough. But if our chairman was rich as **** we would have even better attendance than we do now most probably. ****es me off that colchester are getting attendances of just over 4,000. And we have gone down to league two with attendances almost twice as much. Crazy stuff.

Not quite true, our home average this season is 7,718. Colchester's is 5,519.

I know ours would have been a bit higher had we not been in this position but not much higher as home average last season was 7,850 and in 2007/8 our play-off season our average crowd was 8,173. So only 455 people per match between a play-off season and a relegation season.

But then on that count, Newcastle should be finishing 4th every season and Leeds going for Europe against the likes of Villa, Liverpool and Sunderland. Big crowds does not (and should not) equal success, sadly these days a decent commercial manager, a Russian oligarch/Middle Eastern mystery man and a showcase signing from Japan/South Korea allow you to go for success.

See, new stadium and look at it, just look at it, 2,744 people through the gates in the biggest game? 1,908 average attendance. Why do we need to build such a huge ground?

(There, that's the Darlington comparison done for this thread too.)

Im hinting some tongue in cheek there !

Not sure why anyone compares us to Darlington as we are easily twice the size of them.

Over the last 8 years their average attendances are:
3312 (2002/03)
5023
4244
4198
3849
3818
2931
1907 (2009/10)

Our attendances over the period are anywhere from twice, to quadruple theirs.

Indeed JM, Darlington also has a far smaller catchment area than we do, and battle a far harder "top team" mentality locally than us with the proximity of Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesboro'.

Did no-one else notice that Burton's biggest crowd is bigger than their capacity??!!! How does that happen?

Don't thnk we can compare this season's crowds with League 2's crowd levels. We will inevitably have a smaller STH base; fewer floating voters week in week out, and certainly much much smaller away following. Those three in combination will shave off at least a thousand from our averages from this season, and that's being optimistic.

Factor in the effects of the economy and the sovereign debt crisis pinching our standard of living and it could be a tough year. But then we've got Tilly so everything seems tough cos that's the only adjective he knows ;-)

On the plus side, lots of new grounds and some older ones with great character and terracing. Happy days out ione terraces
will make a change from dismal ones in anonymous legoland stadia.
