A Leyton Orient XI comprising a mixture of first-team and academy players took on Southend United in a behind-closed-doors friendly this afternoon at Gaughan Group Stadium.

Harrison Sodje had the first effort of the fixture for the O’s after 3 minutes, latching onto a Jack Simpson through ball, but David Martin held his effort.
The visitors had their first opportunity minutes later, when Marcus Dackers got on the end of a lofted delivery, but angled his drive just wide.
Danny Waldron was next to try his luck for the Shrimpers, angling a shot at goal from the left-hand side of the area, but Sam Howes was level to the strike.
Southend did take the lead in the 18th minute, when Oliver Coker angled a free-kick over the wall and into the bottom corner, despite a touch from Howes.
Dan Adu-Adjei almost drew the O’s level with a moment of brilliance, dispossessing his defender and striking at goal, but his effort from the edge of the area struck the crossbar.
Moments later, Jordan Brown found space in the area, but Martin produced a one-handed stop to keep the visitors ahead.
Makai Welch levelled the scores in the 32nd minute, latching onto a through ball from Adu-Adjei, and finished well past Martin for a deserved equaliser.
Despite the O’s enjoying the majority of possession, the sides went into the break all-square.
Half-time: Leyton Orient 1-1 Southend United
The O’s threatened immediately after the restart, with Jayden Sweeney playing Charlie Pegrum in, but the O’s winger’s shot rose just over the crossbar.
Dan Carter, on as a half-time substitute, played the ball out wide to Sweeney who took aim, but his strike was smothered by Southend substitute goalkeeper, Colin Andeng-Ndi.
Southend looked to retake the lead through Waldron, but he drilled a shot just wide from a tight angle, with an effort Sam Howes looked to have covered.
Waldron did score Southend’s second goal moments later, controlling well and finishing well past Howes in the 75th minute.
Dan Adu-Adjei levelled the scores once more with around ten minutes left of the fixture, outmuscling Ollie Kensdale to win the ball back in the penalty area, before firing into the empty net.
Jayden Sweeney went inches away from putting the O’s in front in the dying stages, shimmying on the edge of the 18-yard box before angling a strike just wide.
Dan Carter scored what turned out to be the winner with the final kick of the fixture, latching onto Tariq Al-Sadi’s cross, and after taking a second to compose himself, he fired in the winner, to give the O’s victory at Gaughan Group Stadium.
