For tomorrow's match against a Lincoln side, which will be managed by the son of the late ex-Shrimper Keith Lindsey, the man in the middle is second year Football League referee, Darren Sheldrake from Kingston in Surrey.
His refereeing career has progressed quickly making the National List just 12 years after taking up the whistle at the age of 14. He has already been appointed to a couple of Championship matches so things must be going reasonably well for him. This will be his 26th League match with the previous 25 including no Lincoln matches at all and just the one Southend match, at home to Exeter last season. There were no goals and just the one caution for Scannell. Barry Corr was not playing as he was sitting out his third suspension of the season but Adam Stansfield made his last appearance at Roots Hall prior to his recent sad and untimely death.
His card count has virtually doubled this season, but for some reason he has only done 4 matches and therefore may not be significant. Last season 54 yellows and 4 reds from 24 matches; this season 16 yellows and 1 red (Lee Barnard) from those 4 games.
Mike Bull from Chelmsford and Gary Young from Bedford will be running the lines with Matt Stewart from Ipswich standing by with the numbers board hoping to come on as he did at Watford earlier this season when Kettle went off injured (no, nothing career threatening I'm afraid).
