SOUTHPORT 2-3 REDDITCH UNITED
By Andy Mitchell
The Reds came back from two goals down to beat the league leaders at Haig Avenue and fully deserved their three points for rolling up their sleeves in difficult conditions.
United made one change to the side that lost at Hinckley, Mark Rawle coming in for Aman Verma in a 4-5-1 formation.
The driving wind and rain was at Southport's backs in the first half and Redditch found it hard to get over the halfway line, Mark Duffy on the right was a constant thorn in The Reds side and saw a 35 yard drive sail just over on 10 minutes and it took only 19 minutes for the home side to take the lead, Duffy crossing for Michael Powell to bomb on and head in at the back post.
Four minutes later United were two behind, Duffy again involved when his inswinging free kick caught the wind and swerved into Danny Lewis's top corner. Neil Robinson went close with a low drive on 38 minutes but his shot skimmed wide and this proved to be vital as Danny Edwards got the Reds back in it 5 minutes before the interval, Chris Dickinson played a clever low ball in behind for Edwards to latch onto and bundle home with home 'keeper Tony McMillan and right back Kevin Lee getting in a right pickle.
With the elements now favouring them, United came out for the second half in confident mood, passing the ball well and looking dangerous and they equalised on 56 minutes, Matt Clarke's strong run created the space for Owen Story to whip a ball in for Mark Rawle who placed his bullet header inside McMillan's near post and restore parity.
With the crowd on their backs Southport went three up front and Duffy continued to give the Reds a torrid time, this culminated in him springing the offside trap on 68 minutes and going down in the box after seemingly passing Lee Ayres, the decision seemed harsh and justice was done as Ciaran Kilheeney hit the post from 12 yards. Just two minutes later Reds 'keeper Danny Lewis was the hero saving Adam Flynn's 20 yard rocket that seemed destined for the bottom corner.
Substitute Aman Verma had two close efforts after tenacious runs from midfield before winning United a corner with 10 minutes to go, Danny Edwards swung it into the box and Lee Ayres climbed highest to claim his first Redditch goal and from there United held out comfortably keeping the ball well and looking the likelier to add to the scoreline.
