Mervyn Cawston

We were blessed at this time with some very decent keepers, I think it was Neil Freeman here at around the same time and also excellent.

He was just before my time - last played for us in March 85 and I first went in the September - so what sort of keeper was Merv? Good stopper? Dominant in the box? The lot? Just curious really as I know he's regarded as a Southend great.

Some clips of Cawston on this link. Not one of his best matches unfortunately. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=01aoftNrw1k

Alan Biley's mullet! A podgy Southend skipper! Danny Greaves! Youths sitting on a wall to watch the game! Cawston wearing what looks like a pyjama top! That dugout! A Minerva Supreme football! A face save! Policemen dressed like proper policemen! A pitch invasion! This clip is gold.

David Crown was also at Portsmouth then as well and played a few times that season, but it was the days of only 1 sub and did not get many games.

best clip i have seen for "yonks"...full ground, atmosphere, fans on the pitch, even a "bog"roll thrown after the first goal..70s-80s footie...bring it back(with my hair)....have you found any other older southend games????

No way would they allow that kind of incursion these days! Definitely not one of Merv's better performances.
