On Saturday we have Select Group referee, Keith Stroud from Gillingham in Dorset (not sure why they list him as Hampshire). In his fifth season as a League referee he has risen through the ranks and did 7 Premiership games last season.

He has done Southend 5 times before (2 w 2 l 1 d) the most notable being the vital end of season victory against Bristol City. The only previous away game was also in London - the 2-2 draw at Orient. (Given the current climate, I think I'd take a draw if offered).

His last Southend appointment was changed at short notice; perhaps he'll show up for this one.

A somewhat short official who doesn't hesitate to produce cards if necessary but is right more often than wrong.

Assistants are the newly promoted SG lino, Steve Child from Kent and Mike Murphy from West Midlands with Graham Scott, a first year League referee, man-handling the numbers board.

Elsewhere, Brighton have Kettle, a fate we would wish on all our opponents one week before we play them.

Also the reserve team players get very excited as they know they will get a start in the proceeding game
