Remember it well, my nan had just had a mini stroke that day as well and been brought over to stay with us.

No Paul, she died about two weeks later. It was the first of several, and I never did understand why she came to us rather than went into hospital. Date's always stuck in my mind.

Before they were born ?

Actually no, both were born late in '75 - Dec on 25th Sept and Ant a few weeks later. Still, at less than a year old I very much doubt they had any connection to this disaster!

But rumour has it that their very first holiday was in southend in 1976 and as it is also well known that they are both human/dog hybrids, technically one year to us is really 7 in dog years...so as cheeky 7 year olds on a holiday to Southend in 1976, the finger is quite rightly pointed at them for this heinous crime against Southend Pier!!

I was coming back late from the City that night and got off the train at Leigh, and you could see the Pier was engulfed in flame, IIRC this was around 2130hrs. As has been said on here before it's such a crying shame that in 32 years the Pier has never been restored to it's Edwardian glory.
