Mountain bike advice?

Hank - don't go there! Cycling is the worst thing you can do for football training as it exercises the wrong muscles in your legs. I know this because Terry Venables' dad took TV's bike away for this very reason!

And if you're not a bike mechanic (based on your posts on here so far, probably not) you'd be best to take any bike ordered over the internet to a local bike shop for putting together and adjustments. You'll probably not save much at all by ordering on line, and if you do go that route you'll end up having an ill fitting bike that you'll regret.

Spot on. I had a quick look online and could have saved approx 40 quid but as the mam says it would need assembling and if anything had been missing it would have been rubbish. The shop obvioulsy said any problems bring it back and also said they would do a complete checkover and service in 3 months.

I like the first piece of advice and maybe I should stop reading after your first sentence. Thing is, it's less about football and more about general fitness.

Thanks for all the advice though folks, it's made me think. I'll probably look to get one of the hybrids.

I'd also love to take up any cycle-to-work scheme, but my office is avout five metres from the bedroom. The bike is more to get me away from the office than to it.

There's a new range of Boardman branded hybrids being sold through Halfords BikeHut apparently. They look quite good, high spec for decent price.

if your going to stay on road some racing hybrid cross will be best for munching some miles .. drop handlebars but not the wafer thing tyres.. if your gonna poodle round town then a hybrid, or wht us older poster would call 'a nornal bike'.. there are some good places to cycle roud southend if you get out and about early.. i presonnally prefer off road so have a mountain bike, if you get into it you will end up spending as much as you can,, also you will want the spd clip in pedals as you get better.
despite being flatish there are plenty of good routes nearby , hadleigh, that country park that goes over to hockley and rochford, are two within easy distance with some good tracks.. I have full suspension but have the rear cranked up to nearly the max so there is only a tiny amount of give.. invest in some padded shorts if you start racking up the miles
